Being able to read and write doesn't mean you can understand spoken language, or speak.
MaalusDeaf people know how to read lips to understand people who donโt know sign language. Also โhears for the first timeโ might be an embelishment in the story - lots of people are partially deaf and can hear something, just not enough to understand the words and they revert to lip reading.
