Calling all science/tech folks: Do you have thoughts about xkcd? Parker Bach & I are trying to understand the role that xkcd plays in the scientific/technical community. Will you share your thoughts? https://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=v4j5cvGGr0GRqy180BHbR64w9CfkmX9HrkRf2PpIZWBUQ1oxRERXVFFIRERIQUhJSDhDNVoxUU1CNS4u&route=shorturl And since we are doing a snowball sample, please spread the word!

@zephoria Shared here and over at Linkedin. Gotta also give a shout out to It’s complicated, been re-reading it for my thesis recently 🦾
@zephoria will you be sharing the results / conclusions of the survey?
@lhengstmengel We will certainly share the results of the study. But the survey is just one part. And it’s not a quant study so sharing the numbers alone would make zero sense.
@zephoria sudo send out the survey to your friends.
@zephoria why is “no” not an option for these questions? Not appreciating the survey design here.
@migurski @zephoria I suspect they wrote the questions the way they did to try and get more nuance out of the "No" responses. I think that the fact that it's snowball sampling, the PIs are assuming that all prospective survey participants have at least heard of the webcomic.
@trishalynn @migurski Sorry to annoy you. This isn’t a quant study by design. So we are trying to keep some of these questions light rather than serious even as we look for the breadth of perspectives.
@zephoria @migurski I appreciate the thought behind the survey design. Also, the fact that you have at least one prospective survey participant having a conflict with your survey design is surely some kind of qualitative data point, right? ;)
@migurski @zephoria “Do you have thoughts about xkcd?” Yes, it is extremely annoying and I actively avoid it. These survey options suggest that the only possible reason for me not interacting with it more is lack of knowledge on my part. It is insulting.
@zephoria Munroe and Penrose were the main influences to make me grasp the close relation between Science and Philosophy.
@zephoria you totally nerd sniped me
@zephoria oh snap, I forgot to list that one as one of my faves! 🤦🏻
@zephoria thus I was nerd-sniped…
@zephoria I appreciate your final attention.
@zephoria Will you later publish a list of the participants' favourite XKCD comics?
@zephoria hypothesis: xkcd fills the ecological niche in the science/tech community that was previously occupied by The Far Side.

@zephoria I didn't know you were here!

Following you now :)

@zephoria when Randall Monroe came to Google in 2007 it was quite an event https://youtu.be/zJOS0sV2a24?si=MqAEnsxqQ4Mv_oPQ

Randall Munroe's visit to Google (xkcd) | Beyond Satire

@zephoria

I'm not a sci/tech person (except in the manner of Marshall McLuhan) but xkcd has always been interesting, thought-provoking, and frequently points me towards things (areas of study, natural phenomena, maths, etc) I didn't even know existed!

@zephoria and at the end there the address [email protected] for input is shown!

@zephoria

The less the people know about how surveys and operating systems are made, the better they'll sleep at night.

What context will the results end up in,
and is this context going to be a walled garden with a corporate toll booth restricting access to the information contained within?

@zephoria I know this is an old post, but did you figure out the role of xkcd? What did you find?
