Good grief. Starlink v2 satellites are generating 32 times more radio emission than previous generations! This is totally blinding to radio telescopes and will stop us doing science in this part of the spectrum.

Elon Musk's Starlink satellites 'blocking' view of the universe

Radio waves from the satellites are "blinding" radio telescopes and hurting research, say scientists.

BBC News
@Astromeg
You're just anti-progress being against Starlink's aim of **checks notes** delivering expensive, mediocre Internet connectivity to 0.4% of the population.

@Rhodium103 @Astromeg Forget where I originally read this, but the goal for the Starlink project is (as I understood it), to offer a slightly faster rate of data transmission than trans-Atlantic data cables, for a few millisecond's edge in microtrading stocks between London and New York, and more broadly allowing daytrading from yachts and vacation destinations with less robust data links. Every other proposed benefit is just window dressing.

What's a little Kessler Syndrome and damage to astronomy planet wide, in the face of helping parasites make more millions, while contributing nothing of value.

@Astromeg ....oh bloody marvelous

@Astromeg

We need a ban on the Musk satellites right now before they also disturb all GPS signals worldwide

@Luuk_Aalders we certainly need better cooperation and stronger incentives for not destroying other peoples activities.
@Luuk_Aalders @Astromeg I don’t think even musk could get away with interfering with GPS to be honest, and if he did I think we’d find governments actually _can_ spring into gear and enforce things at a reasonable speed
@Astromeg why would you want to look at the universe, while Elon's star shines much brighter?

@Astromeg

In 2021 I didn’t realize that Don’t Look Up meant there would be literally nothing to see beyond our garbage…

@DavidM_yeg it does feel like it’s heading in that direction!
@Astromeg help science by shooting down Elon’s stupid fucking satellites
@inderix I’m not sure that would solve anything, he’d just launch more of them anyway.
@Astromeg This strikes me with troubling echoes similar to plot threads of the Trisolarans trying to stop humanity's progress in science in the Three Body Problem sci-fi series.
@Astromeg I did not know there were over 6k Starlink satellites in orbit
@allanb with a lot more to come. And from other companies/governments too.
@Astromeg And yet Melon Usk is worshiped by a lot of absent mind nerds.
@Astromeg the privatization of the earth's orbit. which authoritative government bodies allowed Apartheid Clyde to do this???

@Astromeg
tech bros: "elon will take us all to space!"

elon musk: [rapidly constructing a cage of space debris that makes space travel harder, eventually impossible, blocks our view of the universe and furthering global warming with all the objects burning up in the atmosphere on re-entry, effectively trapping us on this planet while also making it harder to live on]

@Astromeg How did I know that was going to happen..

@Astromeg

Welcome to the neoliberal free market wild west where everything is possible and the richest meanest bastards win!

@Astromeg this is beyond maddening. You shouldn’t be allowed to fill our atmosphere with your junk just because you can afford it 😑 this is all of our planet not only the billionaires
@Astromeg This feels like intend. Blocking everything on earth and then sell stuff from any orbit.
@Astromeg It would solve so many problems to just nationalize this enterprise. Make it a government monopoly, fund it well, and shut down competing satellite clusters.
@Astromeg I hope @BNetzA enforces the #Effelsberg #SpectrumRegulations against #Starlink under threat of revoking their #Telco license!
@Astromeg that's bad. how come that BS got to the space without concerns about scientific research damage?

@Astromeg I hate this fuck so much.

For so many reasons.

@Astromeg that man is a clear and present danger to humanity
@Astromeg what if, in theory, a strong research laser malfunctioned and hit one of those star link satellites?
@Astromeg oh, seems the Trisolarans manipulated us into building our own primitive Sophons to disrupt our progress!
@Astromeg Welcome to the world of confiscating the common goods.

@Astromeg

I wish I could say I'm surprised. But it's Starlink, so I'm not! Everything Musk touches turns to shit! Honestly the man should be in jail, not throwing more junk into orbit.

@Astromeg
Now we just need to...shoot it down.
Billionares shouls not have the rights to put anything into space. Especially ones like Musky who don't even know how to deliver a working car.
@Astromeg even more reason to move those radio telescopes to the moon and start having moon bases. Just sayin'.

@Astromeg I'm just wondering, what if a radio telescope tried to do a radar measurement of an asteroid and a Starlink happened to be in the beam path?

I mean, oops, there are just so darn many of them up there, so sorry about the terawatt of beam power into your receivers.
📡⚡️

@Astromeg Perhaps these noisy megaconstellations could be required to pay into a fund that will enable radio telescopes to finally be set up on the far side of the Moon?
