Favourite graphics trick from an old WebGL gamedev prototype. Saturated shadows and desaturated light during the day. The opposite at night. #screenshotsaturday
I think the reason this works is the overexposure and glare from bright daylight kind of overpowers colours, making shadows look more colourful in comparison. While at night there’s not enough light in shadows to see much colour, so then lit things look more colourful.
Still need to figure out how to represent the in-betweens: rainy landscapes and forests under cloudy skies. Shadows kind of melt away and everything ends up looking flatly desaturated. Hard to make an appealing image out of that.

@jonikorpi Saturated shadows when it's sunny probably emulates bounce light too maybe?

Looks great!

@designerbradley Yeah definitely! I think the daytime shadow tint we perceive comes primarily from light bouncing off the sky. Kind of teal in the morning, and more purple in the evening.
@jonikorpi Oh, what a great trick!! I was already aware of higher-saturation shadows, but to swap them at night!? It works really well!! I will have to bear that in mind for future art projects.
