If you're a gamedev releasing on Steam: PLEASE MAKE A DEVELOPER PAGE

You are literally leaving community on the floor when you launch a game without one, players can't follow you on Steam without that page being defined

I'm even seeing PUBLISHERS forget to make one

Please, just do the needful 😭

#GameDev #IndieDev

Oh! oh @Robin_Van_Ee made a good point:

ALSO MAKE SURE YOUR DEV PAGE IS LINKED TO ALL YOUR GAMES

It isn't (necessarily) an instant process. Like it basically works if you're 100% self published, but for cases where games had multiple devs, publishers, etc?

You can manually add those entries to your dev page too! I think the current "owner" has to ok it or start the process or something.

EDIT: and confirmed, a single game can be linked to multiple developers (like for co-developed games), pretty sure you can have one link per displayed name as you'd expect

@glassbottommeg Yes, you can link multiple developers. And regardless of how many entities are working on your game you'll have to link the page manually (maybe only once per name?).

Either way don't assume it works, you should check the preview of your store page and click the link. It should link to your curator page.

@glassbottommeg And then, if you have a publisher, watch your publisher claim not just the publisher name but also the developer name as a link to *their* publisher page 😠 I've seen this *so* often.

@runevision I HOPE that's a thing where the dev didn't know to ask and the publisher would have if it was pointed out but

yeeeaaaahhhhh

That seems like such a shady fucking thing, and I see it constantly

@glassbottommeg It's #2 on my quick tips for devs https://www.gamingonlinux.com/forum/topic/6133/

so many indie devs not doing the actual important stuff lol

I decided to actually make a little guide for indie devs here on their - Forum post on GamingOnLinux.com

GamingOnLinux

@gamingonlinux not GAME store page. I mean Developer page.

It's what comes up when someone clicks your name in the developer or publisher field.

If you haven't defined one, best case, it just pulls up a list of all games associated with that name. But notably won't let you follow that dev.

Worst case, it pulls up the PUBLISHER'S page when someone hits your studio name, and nobody even realizes you're a separate entity.

@glassbottommeg Ah yes, that too is a great idea and underused on Steam!
@glassbottommeg
Incidentally, I like it as a player too. It's win-win.

@ipsquiggle yeah!

Like this is important for dev knowledge but like, I just personally get frustrated when I click that button and get nothing.

I wanna see what other games THEY made, not their publisher, come on.

@glassbottommeg Ooh, thank you. I thought I'd already done this but apparently it wasn't linked yet.
@glassbottommeg Wait, what? I've had a game out for 5 years and I've never heard of this. When you click my studio name it just takes me to a list of games my studio has released. What's a "developer page" and how do you create one?

@louis @glassbottommeg The developer page has this kind of link (it's mine) : https://store.steampowered.com/developer/tomlabgames/

I guess people who subscribe to this page are notified when a new game is added.

Steam Developer: Tomlab Games

I'm a solo indie game developer living in France. My current game is Pictopix, a picross game for pc!

@Gamrok @glassbottommeg Yeah, after some searching, I finally found it. Can't believe I hadn't heard of this before.

For those who have a steam developer account, here's the relevant doc page: https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/store/creator_homepage

@glassbottommeg
Funnily enough, you also need a publisher to have a developer page to be able to ignore them on Steam. And I suspect some devs actually don't make the page on purpose for that reason. Usually those actors are the ones who publish enourmous amount of trashy cashgrabs.
@glassbottommeg You underestimate how little publishers care about actually doing publishing things. They fund and see who survives.
@glassbottommeg Make a what what? I've had my games on Steam for 6 years and this is the first time hearing of such a feature. Will definitely add one now that I know.
