Rented a bike yesterday, and took it over the Golden Gate Bridge!

It was extremely foggy, which added a nice "edge of the world" atmosphere...

In the 50s, there were plans of building a freshwater dam here.

They wanted to simulate the effects it would have, but couldn't do it in software yet.

So... they just built a hydraulic model of the entire Bay Area, in a scale of 1:1000!!! You can visit, it's huge!!

@blinry obligatory Tom Scott video about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i70wkxmumAw
This giant model stopped a terrible plan

@blinry my grandfather took me to see that when i was small! (he was a geologist) i'm amazed it still exists!
@blinry there was also a Mississippi River Basin model. It covered 200 acres! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mississippi_River_Basin_Model

@blinry Was that yellow sticker on the fence post already there when you got there?

@blinry

You were lucky! When I visited San Francisco in 2008 we took a picture in front of the bridge - with the bridge completely invisible behind heavy fogg. 🥺

I have been told that that is often the case!

@JayJulez @blinry that's always the case in summer!
@blinry crappy rendering distance. Are you playing this on a PS1 or what??
@blinry Did you visit Sausalito on the other side? It is really cute, well at least it was in the 90s, haven't been there since, but have relatives living there and went to school there for two month once. 😅

@neonmate Yes! That's where I found the Bay Area Model! The waterfront had nice views, as well!

Cool, what do you remember about going to school there?

@blinry It was a weird experience, it was 5th grade, so I did not know much English. It was 5th and 6th grade together in the school there, the teachers name was Liz and everybody called her by her first name and they tried to teach me fractional arithmetic in math, which I did not understand at all. 😂
Unfortunately, I was there for too short a time to really get to know other students.
@blinry I believe my great aunt and my great uncle still live there, their house is up the hill enough you can see the skyline of SF. I loved this house a lot, but the road up was very steep, I still remember walking up there was not easy. And you needed some serious car driving and parking skills living there. 😅
@blinry Nice! It looks like my tip about biking the waterfront and the bridge worked well. You get to decide where to explore.
The fog is common summer weather in SF. When the Central Valley gets hot, the warm air rises, causing low pressure at the surface. It pulls air through the Golden Gate from the Pacific and the fog with it. https://avgeek.social/@ikluft/113007112541639467

Attached: 4 images @[email protected] @[email protected] When I lived in San Jose, after they extended BART trains through my area I'd bring my bicycle on the train to SF for a ride. My farthest ride starting from SF was to Vallejo, returning via the SF Bay Ferry at sunset. But that's too far for a rental bike like you'd probably be using. It also crossed gaps in the SF Bay Trail. These pics were from various rides in SF along the waterfront and at the Golden Gate Bridge, which has a bike path, part of the SF Bay Trail.
