absolutely beyond fucking devastated to hear @stevesilberman is gone. the world is poorer for it. i met steve 25+ years ago, after virtually memorizing "skeleton key" (& regularly reading his hotwired column) just after i graduated high school & he became a very real mentor & even better friend. my partner says she can always tell when i've been on a call with steve because i always get off the phone happy. today's deadcast episode leads with some of our last real conversation, from 2 weeks ago.
please crank up some planet earth rock & roll orchestra & direct your love towards the haight.
anybody flying a freak flag today, real or internal, would be advised to raise it at half mast for @stevesilberman.
this @stevesilberman entry in "skeleton key" is one of the great 7-word short stories in the head canon.
@bourgwick @stevesilberman my first intro to the Dead as a teen was Skeleton Key. I wore it out. This spring, when Steve was a guest in David Gans’ Stanford class, I was able to thank him for giving me my first connection to community. May his memory be a blessing.
@bourgwick @stevesilberman oh no!!! I love his writing! That's not fair ☹️
@bourgwick @stevesilberman This is brutal. What a loss for so many communities, obviously, but a very personal one here.

@bourgwick @stevesilberman

And we will be spinning a lot of David Crosby as well.

God speed to an amazing human.

@bourgwick @stevesilberman So sad to hear about Steve’s passing. Although I only knew him through a few lively Mastodon and Twitter interactions and the ongoing Deadcast appearances, I felt quite surprised when I read the news earlier today. Tuning in to the latest Deadcast this afternoon was bittersweet, as I listened to him share a few stories about the April 78 tour. I particularly loved his take on drums/space, and his naming it as his religion. My condolences for your loss.
@bourgwick @stevesilberman The number of different subcultures I’m seeing recognize this wonderful human being are a testament to his legacy. May his spirit live on in us all.
@bourgwick has to be the Watkins Glen soundcheck.
@bourgwick @stevesilberman Aw shit. This sucks. So sorry for your loss.
@ry_storm @bourgwick @stevesilberman condolences, Jesse. I'm very sorry to hear it.
@bourgwick I'm sorry for your loss. May his memory be a blessing. @stevesilberman
@bourgwick @stevesilberman
I am in total shock…I have kept up with Steve for years through mutual interest in Grateful Dead, Crosby, and neurodiversity…His book NeuroTribes is amazing and he sent me a signed copy of Skeleton Key after telling him my copy disappeared with the last person who borrowed it…
This one really hurts…
Love to Keith and family and all of his friends in SF and on the web…
Damn…
@bourgwick Wow.. I did not know him personally, but one of my all time favorite scholars and Deadheads. A big loss for our community, and others as well.
@InstituteJerry @bourgwick me too, felt like a friend from all his writing and posts. Very sad news.
@bourgwick @stevesilberman
RIP Steve, one of the first heads I followed on Twitter, then this platform.
@bourgwick very sorry for your loss. He was a good representative for the Deadhead community.
@bourgwick sorry for your loss. one of the greatest Heads.
@bourgwick @stevesilberman He and I only chatted on the phone once and he was very kind. Sorry for your loss, Jesse.
@bourgwick @stevesilberman This is beyond fucked. I am not ok with this.
@bourgwick @stevesilberman … such a long long time to be gone and a short time to be there …
@stevesilberman @bourgwick I’m really sorry man. I never met him but absolutely loved the wit, humor, and genuinely unique view he brought to anything he talked about. I’m devastated, so I can’t imagine how those close to him are feeling today💙
@bourgwick @stevesilberman Yeah, I knew him since he was <digaman> on The WELL when I got on there in ‘91. I've been sad about this all afternoon. Damn.
@bourgwick @stevesilberman
So he was digaman! I did not know that. I was on the Well for several years later 80s, early 90s.
@bourgwick @stevesilberman oh my God, I was just reading his posts yesterday! Condolences to his partner and friends and family. What a shame to lose him.😔
@bourgwick @stevesilberman loving his comments in this ep from today.
Perfect.
@bourgwick @stevesilberman so sorry for your loss. For all our loss too.
@bourgwick @stevesilberman I was listening to his voice on the new episode when I saw the news. Tough day.
@bourgwick @stevesilberman very sad news…did not know him personally, but traded some social media posts. And knew him from his writings and bright presence in the family. Life is very fragile…
@bourgwick @stevesilberman I never had the pleasure of meeting Steve Silberman. But whenever I heard him or read anything by him his joy, his humanity lifted me up. He will be missed.
@bourgwick I am so sorry to hear this. Love to you and to Steve's loved ones
@bourgwick @stevesilberman I loved hearing his joy and excitement while speaking of Drums->Space.
