I've been watching a bunch of skateboarding videos on YouTube where people really mess themselves up. Almost 100% guaranteed they're not wearing adequate protection. Even the downhill longboarders!

After my first few falls, I decided to pad up - elbows, knees, wrists(!), and helmet. This has saved me loads of times. I know guys in their 50s and 60s still skating - they all wear protection. It's the only way. #skateboarding

I mean, if you're travelling at 80kph down a mountain road and you come off without pads you're going to have a bad time. It's not rocket science.
@feijoa When it’s 36 degrees I wear shorts on short trips on the motorbike. Other than that: I gear up and embrace the sweat and the stink.
@Twalzer Shorts and knee pads?
@feijoa No pads with the shorts. The proper long trousers are padded at the hips and knees and offer some skid protection. However, if I crash against a car it all won’t help much. With the shorts it’s: no nothing, only careful driving. Which has limits…

Avoiding protective equipment is a particularly masculine thing down at the skatepark. Women are far more sensible about it - roller skaters, ex roller derby riders, are fully padded up because falls are guaranteed.

I read about a stage of development in teenagers and young men - being aware that a thing is dangerous, but believing that it won't happen to you. That age group forms the skating core. No surprise that people quit to avoid injuries later in life. #skateboarding #rollerSkate #safety

@feijoa #Skateboarding without pads is in most instances negligent. And I don't mean standard situations/tricks. I mean situations where every sane person knows that you couldn't protect your head/wrists/... yourself (w.o. pads) if you fall.
It is ridiculous that #Andy_Anderson was constantly harassed for wearing a helmet.

I've seen so many severe injuries that could've been avoided using pads. One died a few weeks after a skull fracture. A simple helmet would have been sufficient.

@skateboarding I watched a Rodney Mullen documentary and his dad insisted no skating unless he wore full padding. That was his entire look in the freestyle days. In the 90's revival when he moved to street that the equipment all comes off. There's a big cultural difference between street and transition/bowl skaters. As for downhill, I just don't understand only wearing a helmet - each fall guarantees injury. Even sponsored pro videos - you regularly see bleeding elbows #skateboarding
