OvercastVersion 2024.8.2 is now live in the App Store:
STREAMING IS BACK!
Also in this update:
- Smart Speed now displays its current speed
- Podcasts can now have different sort order for Unplayed and All modes
- Other minor fixes
Michael@overcastfm was there a technical change that makes streaming more feasible in implementation, or is this the same method from the old version of Overcast (feel free to ignore or save for a show)

Is there a known problem with ordering of priority podcasts? Series that I’ve not marked as “high priority” in “All Episodes” seem to get pushed to the top above ones that have been marked as such.

For what it’s worth, I think the current behavior makes sense.

@tod @overcastfm Assuming that users — at least in part — recognize podcasts by their artwork, in views where episodes from multiple podcasts are shown, the “main” artwork is displayed to help users more easily distinguish between shows.
It may be implemented in the future in views where only one podcast is shown.

Currently I’m not using overcast but others. Some were displaying episode artworks in the list of new episodes and I HATED it 😆 because I was unable to see which podcast it came from at a glance. I know „oh that orange thing, put it up front, that black-white thing next“ - this visual approach is falling apart when every episode shod different images 🤪
At least a big enough overlay of the podcast artwork would be helpful.

Jason Martin@overcastfm YEAH!! When streaming was removed, I didn't think it would affect me much at all. But I found that it wasn't downloading in the background consistently, so when I wanted to listen to something, I often had to wait for the full download, which depending on the strength of my connection could take a while.
So this change is much appreciated.
sjhaddow@Jasonact @overcastfm Same. I listened to, and agreed with, the rationale but then within days got bitten by it. Was in a patchy area for mobile signal so had to sit in a supermarket car park for 10 minutes while the latest episode of ATP downloaded (it had been available for 12+ hours but hadn’t downloaded in the background), so I could listen on my 2-hour drive home. Deleted Overcast after that, but will happily reinstall now.

To be evolving… but it feels like it’s designed for the a much more restricted space than even my iPhone SE.
I think the quick buttons are nice but hiding the “custom” controls under a link just seems annoying.

schmegs@overcastfm Ok, I'm trying to figure out how I can get my playlist back to it’s layout from the old version. The high priority podcasts would be grouped by podcast at the top of the list (in priority order, newest to oldest within each podcast), and the low priority podcasts would be in a newest-to-oldest order (individually) under the high-priority group. Is that possible in the newer versions? If this is something you're still working on, I'll wait :)

adorabilis@overcastfm Thank you, I didn’t realise how much I missed streaming until all that many seconds of waiting started to pile up and turn annoying. I’m finally able to hit play and immediately put away my phone again!
I hope the progress bar can be improved next. It’s smaller and feels harder to use than before, likely because I’m unable to do it with the chapters view open. Is variable-speed seeking by dragging up and down possible?

Stephen Price@overcastfm definitely seems like sorting is better, but I’ve seen a few misses. More importantly though, playing stops between playlist entries. Whether I’m just listening and an episode ends, or I fast-forward, it doesn’t advance to the next entry.

@overcastfm: Correction, it’s definitely worse than 50%. It *seems* that maybe it continuously plays episodes that have previously been started, but not others. Not entirely sure though

Can you please make the “Go to Podcast” link much more prominent once again? Previously, we could click on the name of the podcast to get there. Now we have to go to menu, find the last option, and click.
