twelve years ago, a painter by the name of anders ramsell painted 12,597 aquarelle paintings of blade runner, shot by shot, of the entire film edited down to ~35 minutes. it took two years of painstaking work, all done in his spare time after work each night.

the video circled around the web for a few years, and quietly disappeared from every single site it was hosted at.

a few months ago i spent a few hours digging for it, and finally found a copy of the original file.

i'm not sure how long it will last over at IA, so enjoy it while you can. it is a true achievement. 🙏

@vga256 As much as I love Archive.org this is the type of threatened file for which personal data hoarding was invented. Your curatorial work is appreciated!

(Yes, I consider deep-rummaging the internet to find an almost-lost file, and then publicizing its availability, to be the very quintessence of curation.)

@ErosBlog @vga256 I was thinking of downloading a copy myself for my new NAS... Although I really need to sort out the HDDs for it!
@vga256 this is one of the big reasons I love the Internet Archive (and all contributors  ). They host random stuff like this, when nobody else does.

@vga256

Thank you. I remember this and it’s a delight to see it again.

@vga256 This is wicked! Thanks for this.
@vga256
Amazing! Thanks for posting the link.
@vga256 This is wonderful, thank you.
@vga256 Blade Runner is one of my favorite movies of all time and this is amazing! Thank you for the effort you put into finding it!
@voltagex @vga256 most torrents are so ephemeral, considering people stop seeding them after a short while...
@vga256 wow that is some impressive talent and dedication!
@vga256 Watching now

@vga256 I can see why it got taken down. If they had recorded their own soundtrack they might have skirted the edge of destruction.

It wouldn't have made much sense if we weren't familiar with the original movie. But we're glad to have seen it.

@vga256 Wow! This is incredible! If Anders finds this thread: you are incredible!! Thanks for bringing new art and new ideas into this world. We see you!
@vga256 There are scenes from other films interspersed in this, including some that people have identified from Passion of the Christ. It's far more than simple rotoscoping.

@vga256

Remarkable. Absolutely remarkable.

@vga256
The point of this kind of thing is the number not the quality of the render. So big number + staying the course = art statement. See the Chapmans.

Cool if you like that kind of thing, but in the end for me, the number overshadows the message.
@vga256 I downloaded it with torrent and I keep seeding it just in case. Thank you very much for sharing it.

@vga256
Is it ok to mention this project here?

A different, and mostly lost, art form but it seems to belong to the same genre.

@dbrand666 that's a fun one. been around for a long time.
@vga256 I love aquarelle and Blade Runner but, why? I mean it surely looks amazing but

@vga256
Thank you for putting this back out there!

I have added the video to my #peertube archive as well.

@vga256 @jarrod (I don't know how to tag people properly on Mastodon.)
@vga256 this is one of the coolest things I've seen online. Very happy this got archived!
@vga256 Thank you for doing this!
@vga256 Would love to watch this but I can't get it to play on either my phone (Android) or computer (Mac). It just won't load and play.
@vga256 this is amazing, thank you for sharing!

@vga256 Thank you for sharing this, both the link and the story.

This is what the web is for. Nerds, wizards, artists, and freaks; all coming together to share their beauty and passion

@vga256 @skinnylatte This makes me think we're living in a Gibson novel.

@vga256

That's incredibly gorgeous and disorienting. Now I want to see a Stan Brakhage version.

@vga256 I will torrent this for as long as reasonably possible. It's also on my NAS now and will sync to a cloud backup by tomorrow.
@vga256 I have a copy if it ever goes away too. It might be that IA archived the copy from youtube as mine has IsoMedia tag with Google credits.
I believe it was hosted in Vimeo as well at some point which might prove a higher quality, though it is more than watchable as is (but best be seen by those that have already seen it of course; mental visual aids).
@jessienab good to know. what's the file size of your copy?
@vga256 same as I think what's on IA, ~736MB (accounting for bit/byte/kibi counting differences).
@jessienab interesting. i haven't found any evidence of it ever being on vimeo yet - looks like anders was a youtube user from the beginning

@vga256 Seeding! Thanks for sharing!

Its like being inside a dream. I loved watching this so much. ❤️

@vga256 Found a viewable copy on Vimeo. (maybe you put it there, iDK)
