The White Cart in full spate today as it passes over a 19th Century caul (or weir) on the Pollok House estate in Glasgow. In the background are an early 20th Century hydroelectric power station, a mid-19th Century water-powered sawmill, and a range of stables, parts of which may date back as far as the 1600s.

Weirs are a great place to watch the complex currents emerge as a river crosses them, but they're also deceptively dangerous. Iirc in US there's a move to reduce old weirs as they can be fatal obstacles
@bencardoen They can, indeed, be lethal. However, I think that most weir removal programmes in the US are more about restoring natural river flows and making life easier for migratory fish than for safety reasons.
