Via Carole Cadwalladr:

America needs to learn the terrifying lesson of the British riots. This was #Musk’s trial balloon for the US election.

The prospect of political violence is real. And Musk’s behaviour is a warning shot of what’s to come. My piece for ObserverUK:

Inciting rioters in Britain was a test run for Elon Musk. Just see what he plans for America

The presidential election is three months away. What if the billionaire contests the result? What if he decides democracy is overrated?

Thank you for boosting. Carole Cadwalldr is one of the most important journalist in Britain, ever since breaking the link between social media and election interference. We do well to listen to her.

@TCatInReality @GottaLaff but sadly, no one with the authority to do anything seems to want to bother. From May & Johnson’s studious looking the other way to avoid any risk of seeing the Russian influence on Brexit to Starmer’s stated intention of “influencing” the broligarchy to behave responsibly

Talk about a lone voice in the wilderness - as you say, it’s crucial to keep sharing Carole Cadwalladr’s work, if only to bear witness

@Simon318ppm @TCatInReality @GottaLaff when has Starmer said he isn't going to tackle inciting violence online? I think he was clear that those who have incited hate online will be held responsible. This had begun to happen with a number of prison sentences for inciting violence online. The EU are also going after Musk for the same reason & with the help of the UK government. I agree it's difficult to get Musk in the UK to answer for his behaviour, but that's not the same as endorsing it.

“A Terrible Vulnerability”: Cybersecurity Researcher Discovers Yet Another Flaw in Georgia’s Voter Cancellation Portal

The flaw would have allowed anyone to submit a voter registration cancellation request for any Georgian using their name, date of birth and county of residence — information that is easily discoverable online.

@GottaLaff eep! That's a thought that's going to fester.

"But this is Britain, where extremist political violence is someone carrying a brick and throwing a chair leg. In America, there aren’t just automatic weapons and rights to openly carry firearms, there are actual militias."

@derek @GottaLaff Not to be overly pedantic, but shouldn't militias be in quotes here? An actual militia is recognized by the government as a group that can be called on in case of invasion by another country, not a group of cosplaying racist incels with guns.
@Mayor_of_Smartarse @derek @GottaLaff That’s an entire constitutional can of worms. I’m 100% on board with militias being regulated and folded into the actual military, or being defined as the National Guard. Unfortunately, regulating militias would be difficult to do without stacking the SCOTUS.
@derek @GottaLaff The person quoted is perhaps being intentionally naive if she/he doesn’t think there are any organized far right groups in Britain. And as Jan6 quixotically proved, the lust to go in shooting is tempered by fundamental cowardice. The gun nuts are much happier with soft targets. A lot of folks could die though, if they think they have license to shoot willy-nilly.
@GottaLaff can only agree, Brexit by many accounts was the trial run for the Trump 2016 election.

@GottaLaff

Years later, Historians and Geologists from Mars(h) gather to examine Elon Musk’s and Donald Trump’s main contribution to the Planet Earth.

@GottaLaff

Separate from the point she makes in the quote, Cadwalladr's Cambridge Analytica coverage, and the subsequent parliamentary inquiries, etc., never made any sense. Yes, CA are mercenary thugs. No, CA doesn't have any so-called micro targeting capability, or anything else fancy like that.

Instead of reporting the facts, Cadwalladr spun fairytales fed to her by two grifting simpleton sources: Kaiser and Wylie.

@GottaLaff Cadwalladr was the one who pointed out --AT THE TIME-- that hacking and social media shenanigans associated with Brexit were a trial run for messing with the US election in 2016. She was right then. She has a good track record for being right now.

Wouldn't it be amazing if people paid attention?

@quixote That would be novel

“But what Musk – the new self-appointed Lord of Misrule – has done is to rip off the mask. He’s shown that you don’t even have to pretend to care. In Musk’s world, trust is mistrust and safety is censorship. His goal is chaos. And it’s coming.”

@GottaLaff While there's nothing wrong with her analysis, she did overlook the overwhelming response to those riots from the rest of the population. There's nothing to suggest that the same won't happen here, and there's this false underlying assumption that democrats don't own guns (including AR-15's) and/or don't know how to organize and use them. Yes, US violence would be far more deadly but the far right is still vastly outnumbered.
@GottaLaff Increasingly baffling to consider why respected journalists, organizations and government agencies remain active on Twitter

@peterbutler It's all about the numbers of accounts they reach. They've said that over and over, to my frustration.

They just don't get the same numbers of reposts, replies, etc. on any other platform.

Threads is their second favorite.

Something has to be done about him.
He's been overboard for too long...
