Is it still a Dear John(ny) letter if she's in the service too?
Is it still a Dear John(ny) letter if she's in the service too?
HANK?!?
I did not remember *anything* from this movie. Guess I hated it so much the first time, I blocked it out. π
Denise Richards is just an adorable little cutie pie.
"Arachnid Quarantine Zone" is just not something that should ever need to exist.
No, Johnny! Don't take the stroll down Washout Lane!
Hate it when the bugs whack us good, Johnny.
"WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW *MORE*?"
Nothing like getting kids to stomp cockroaches like a gang of gleeful sociopaths.
Nutso drill sergeants, jarheads and fleet officers, fistfight over a girl, get the matching group tats, follow orders without question, utterly destroy the enemy without mercy -- how did 20yo me not see the ridiculous satire of this movie?
Fifty Courtneys ago. At least.
Mega-giant cockroaches that shoot blue firework rocket bombs out their asses. Neat.
Diz: Ace, what are we doing?
Ace: Uhhh, I dunno.
Why do I have the feeling that exchange happens in war situations a whole lot more often than any of us realize
I feel like maybe their ammo is not particularly effective.
Johnny, no, talk to me, Johnny!
*sigh* Where's a good gif of Guinan when you need one?
Wait, so the main character just got murdered by a giant assassin bug, but the movie is only half over?
FATHER GABE?!?
The scenes with all the bugs scurrying everywhere make me wanna watch #EdgeOfTomorrow again. I don't even care, I love that movie.
Giant flame-spewing cockroach beetle. Gotta be taken down from above.
Where's Legolas when you need him?
Rico, you kill bugs good.
Ye GAWDS how did I not see this movie for what it is?
THEY'RE PLAYING FUCKIN DIXIE π€£
Well Diz, you're finally getting him to lay you. And even Jester understands. I guess. π
Had to pause to check y'all's replies. Now back at it, and suddenly we've got FLYING BUGS?!?
Ach du meine GΓΌte.
Watkins (FATHER GABE), seeing the mangled human bodies inside the military compound:
"Geeeez, someone really humped the bunk."
Y'all, I GUFFAWED. π€£
I think the general has a bug that's going to bust out of his head and I really hope I'm right about that
Aw shoot, flying bug took out the general. I don'tget to see the #BrainWorms.
Oh dang that's a mess of bugs.
I was right! Crazy Carmen crashes the party!
Aw. Jester's dead for real this time.
Ah, and if you'll direct your attention to the right, here we have the traditional scene of The Woman Gets Punished For Having Sex.
"Johnny, I'm dying. But it's all right, because I got to have you."
This is officially the only movie in which I have ever approved of this trope. Because Verhooven eviscerates it.
Doogie Howser lookin' like a skinny little Nazi stormtrooper.
You get all the cookies if you get that reference. π
Oh *now* they don the helmets.
Welp, so much for Xandcar. Carxand? Carmder?
Oh! They're not dead yet! It's only laceratingly painful puncture flesh wounds!
Ace and Sugar got yer back, Johnny.
Carmen totally had a wordless I AM NO MAN moment there! Way to go, CΓ©owyn!
When running from a giant explosion fireball inside a tunnel, I always prefer keeping my attention directly ahead of me and hauling all ass instead of looking over my shoulder again and again to see how far I am from the giant explosion fireball. But hey, that's just me.
Doogie Howser is Ender Wiggins.
WE NEED YOU ALL
***SERVICE GUARANTEES CITIZENSHIP***

Well, that was a lot more fun than than I either remembered or expected. #StarshipTroopers, I have done you a disservice these past 27 years. Mea culpa.
*bows with flourish*
@courtcan the book is on my top 3 RAHβs books. The movie is just amazingly fun. You made it so much more fun with your narration.
I pretty much knew Dizzy was going to buy the farm the moment they had sex β¦ because thatβs a trope. I mean, it fails the Bechtel test miserably.
@GayDeceiver I thought of you earlier when I was pondering my past Heinlein reading! π There is so much about his work that I thoroughly dislike these days. And yet, there's this movie -- the satire might not have been what he intended, but the seeds were in the book. And still have such a soft spot in my heart for Podkayne! π
Yeah, the Woman Gets Punished For Having Sex trope jumped out at me immediately--been discussing it elsewhere in-thread. The subtle, subversive sarcasm...GAH. EXQUISITE.
@courtcan
Is that how the outrunning an explosion fireball thing started -- as satire?
It's sure been copied a lot.
