so uh, if youre subscribed to my patreon, and you did it through an apple device, you may wanna cancel and resubscribe via android or the patreon website because apparently apple is just gonna start taking 30% of the money you wanted me to have come november

this also goes for any other creators you may be supporting

EDIT: apparently this only affects new subscriptions and not preexisting ones? for now, anyway 😒

@eniko IS THAT LEGAL ??!! How can Apple "take a cut FROM Patreon 'because you subscribed from an apple device' "! ??? .. Or it's because the effective payment happens via some Apple Payment method so they charge 30% for that ?? Can they ? I can't believe there's not some EU regulation saying 'they can't do that' ? .. So they are not 'taking from Patreon' but they are charging you 30% because you pay "Via Apple Device" ?? That's a HUGE percentage !! I still wonder "is that legal" ???!!

They have been playing cat and mouse with the EU for a long time: https://www.theverge.com/2024/3/4/24005938/european-commission-antitrust-apple-investigation-anti-steering-rules-app-developers. This is just one of them, USB-C, third party app stores, AI, ... after any new regulation they always invent a new "trick" against the spirit of the law to keep their golden jail, jail paid by users and developers.... My hatred for Apple is matching my hatred for Microsoft, but as a developer I hate Apple even more...
Apple hit with a nearly $2 billion fine following Spotify complaint

Apple has been fined more than 1.8 billion euros by European Union antitrust regulators and told to allow external links in apps so users can sign up for services on developers’ websites.

@gilesgoat @eniko I haven't looked into this specifically, but in general Android and Apple have both required that if you make an app that supports taking payments, you have to do it via that platform's app store payments API, and they've always taken a percentage of those. It's basically just the IAP mechanic and subject to the same cut they take from app sales.

Apple were recently told off for this though, as part of that whole Fortnite saga. Resulting in this...

https://www.theverge.com/2024/8/9/24216181/apple-eu-app-store-services-fee-external-links

Apple adds nearly endless 20 percent fee for developers in latest EU update

Apple will now allow developers in the EU to include links to outside purchases, as long as they pay two new fees that apply to purchases across “any” platform.

The Verge
@eniko it's super "cool" how apple just does this. they started this shit with other in-app subscriptions a while ago, which is why things like youtube premium and a bunch of other things cost way more if you subscribe through iOS, but not if you do in a browser
@eniko what a bunch of fscking cronies. I hope the EU slams them hard... Unfortunately the states won't, which will let them keep ripping everyone off everywhere else.
@eniko I went to the Patreon site, I read this : " The App Store fee is charged by Apple for processing product purchases made on the Patreon iOS app through their in-app payment system. Apple takes 30% of the iOS sale price for products purchased by fans on the iOS app. " So if you pay something on Patreon BY USING THE iOS "Patreon App" THEN you get charged 30% by apple ?? Why one would use an "iOS Patreon App" ? To be able to pay via Apple Pay without using directly a CC or such ?"
@eniko Existing ones as well. They're kicking off a process to migrate all subscriptions to the new model. It's scheduled to take place over 18 months, if I understood their email correctly
@eniko They're also planning to nuke the better payment schedule for all creators and replace it with the one pandering to Apple. They've been trying to nuke it for years because the other one lets them play arbitrage games to take more, and now this is there excuse. So idiotic because *no one* is going to use their hideous iOS App rather than website to fund a creator they love.
@dalias @eniko
One more reason I'm really glad I kicked #Apple to the curb years ago. What a bunch of greedy assholes.

@eniko

Break Apple up, and down.

@eniko

Patreon are busy working to kneecap themselves and the creators who make their business.

Shocking behaviour.

@eniko I always sub via website. I was stung way back when I sub'd YouTube red via iOS, never again.
