If you missed this from Lawrence O’Donnell last night, you missed mandatory viewing. Lawrence was furious, and posted on Threads, “It’s a muted version of what I was actually feeling, including when I threw the papers which surprised me too.”

"It was 2016 all over again today ... the same mistakes are being made"

Lawrence: 'Stupidest' candidate Trump did not answer reporters' questions

Donald Trump rambled and lied for over an hour without any follow up questions or fact-checking. MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell says that while he hopes Vice President Harris answers questions from reporters, after the press conference that Donald Trump turned into a “charade,” Vice President Harris has “absolutely no greater obligation to do so because of what Donald Trump pretended to do today.”

2/ Compare/contrast, From yesterday, via Matt McDermott:

..stunning indictment on polit press. It’s honestly embarrassing. After complaining about press access to Harris, she does press gaggle & every single q is abt Trump. 0 policy. 0 substance

Press q’s asked of #Harris:

• Respond to Trump’s press conf
• Respond to him accepting debate
• Opine on why he pulled out of debate
• Respond to Trump’s criticisms of you
• Respond to Trump’s criticisms of Walz
• When will you take more press q’s

@GottaLaff. It was brilliant and devastatingly accurate.
@GottaLaff
He was stupendous last night! I love him.
@GottaLaff. The juxtaposition of the press's treatment of Biden and Jean-Pierre v. Trump was incredibly damning.

@GottaLaff

He was so on target to what I was feeling.

@Atticus1956 What WE were feeling. What so many of us were.

@GottaLaff It's at least a bit refreshing to see *somebody* calling it out.

Hopefully he keeps it up and brings on Mehdi Hasan and others.

@pixelpusher220 He will. He’s reallllly pissed, and when he’s pissed, he stays on it
@GottaLaff Last night he outdid himself. When he smacked the papers on his desk, I jumped! His honest anger is justified.
@punkhaiku And we were right there with him
@GottaLaff Does anyone know if BBC covered this travesty for the full hour? I usually have it on in the background but missed this (lucky me!) while friends visiting.
@GottaLaff Thanks for sharing this. It was great. I think O'Donnell sees this because he's a traditional journalist, whereas most "journalists" aren't. We don't have journalism anymore. We have entertainment and stories designed to drive clicks and chase ad dollars. The business model of most news outlets reinforces these bad practices.
@GottaLaff about time this is being said out loud!
@GottaLaff Lawrence is, as always, on point. Great segment

@GottaLaff

i remember watching Lou Grant and thinking that journalism could be an honourable profession. It still can be as long as there are journalists like Lawrence O'Donnell and a few others.

The majority seem to be stenographers.

@riggbeck Sidebar: I had a tiny role on The Lou Grant Show
@GottaLaff well holy shit O’Donnell is the man! Someone finally speaks a little reality check on the media. You folks are not doing the job. We’ve been watching this cowardly favoritism for Trump for years and I, for one, am tired of the wordsmithing hijinks of the press! What a refreshing moment to have someone call them out on it! Almost would make me start watching the news again, but I gave it up a long time ago, just heartsick at the daily bullshit. And the speech! Kamala’s speech to the UAW was incredible and inspiring and the networks didn’t show it! So O’Donnell is right that social media has a role to play in this. Don’t let them get away with silencing Kamala while they grovel before the lies of Donald Trump!
@GottaLaff and I’m sorry, I’ve got to add this. Donald Trump turned the press into collaborators in destroying the integrity of a once honorable profession, journalism. What O’Donnell did last night was beyond a blast of fresh air. It was a damning condemnation of those who have collaborated in the destruction.
@annietime @GottaLaff The news media destroyed itself in 2015/2016 by carrying Trump's water. Lawrence is right. They've learned absolutely nothing in the intervening years.

@Seilenos @annietime @GottaLaff

Media destroyed itself in 2002/2003 by never questioning Iraq's weapons of mass destruction narrative.

Media were on the path to self destruction in the 90s with the rise of "infotainment".

Uncritically accepting lies and prioritizing viewing figures over factuality. It's been long in the making.

@Lily_and_frog @annietime @GottaLaff We can go even farther back. Reaganomics (aka "trickle down economics") was sold lock, stock, and barrel to the public, even though people like George HW Bush called it "voodoo economics" (which it is ... except that voodoo sometimes works).
@Lily_and_frog @Seilenos @annietime @GottaLaff 👏Katy Couric cooking for the troops was a particular low point. But what can one expect of a country with almost no foreign correspondents? (The BBC has more than the US across TV, radio and print media *combined*--and they speak the language of countries they report from).

@annietime @GottaLaff

And leading the charge into ignominy are the New York Times and their dark warrior newsbenders Peter Baker and Maggie Haberman.

@annietime @GottaLaff I was astonished/impressed that he slammed his own network as complicit. Rightly so, msnbc has become unwatchable - a lazy recycling of the most provocative stories, not "news".

@annietime @GottaLaff

To O'Donnell's point: I'm looking for a tabulation of how many questions Trump took, how many he answered.

If someone can point me to a transcript, I will do it myself.

@annietime @GottaLaff O'Donnell, Reid and Maddow's shows are also published as free podcasts, if that'd suit you a bit better :)
@annietime @GottaLaff
Is there a link to the UAW speech?
@GottaLaff I just wish he wasn’t taking another week off after that performance. WE NEED MORE OF THIS!
@DebR I know! i was so disappointed

@GottaLaff

I saw this live last night and this morning I've sent the video to at least 7 people....

@GottaLaff Lawrence lit the fuse and let it burn. Devastating. The media ecosystem is contaminated.

Well worth watching O'Donnell's criticism of #MSM:

“Donald #Trump gets credit from the people he lied to today, for lying to them. They appreciate it...

Words spoken after their question marks are not necessarily answers, and are NEVER answers when they come from #DonaldTrump.”

@GottaLaff

The state of our media is a huge disservice to the people of this country. O’Donnell’s piece is absolutely required viewing. We cannot allow the media to continue to attack Harris while giving Trump a pass. They need to call out Trump’s lies, and they need to apply the same standards to how they interview each candidate. The people need fairness and honesty in the reporting, not a thumb on the scale to hand the election to Trump.

@GottaLaff favorite quote: ". . .that vast well of stupidity that makes up most of his brain . . .

@GottaLaff

Fuck the media. Stop. Covering. Trump. We've heard all the lies, enough.

@GottaLaff Thanks for posting that link. It was eye-opening.
@GottaLaff This should be the mantra of journalists going into these press conferences: “A lie is not an answer.”

@GottaLaff

I'm glad he did this. I was thinking this very same thing as the press conference went on. On the ex-bird site I remarked in real time to MSNBC, as the event droned on, «Why give free air to Trump spewing a nonstop series of unchecked lies? STOP. There's no "news" here. No policy. No action. He offers incitement, you offer credibility. If you looked back to media doing such for Hitler, how would you describe their role? Neutral? Proper?»

I had meant to go on longer in that thread, but I just couldn't bear it. I was thinking back to how many times in the 2016 campaign MSNBC had a chyron saying "Breaking news: Trump about to speak". It seemed almost daily and was infuriating. No other candidate got that daily bump. MSNBC should have credited itself later as one of his biggest soft donors. If democracy falls this time, they will be due part credit. But it won't save them from being thrown in jail by Emperor Trump I.

Sadly, the best description I've come up with to describe the relationship of MSNBC and Trump is the old joke, here told by Woody Allen in Annie Hall, that ends with "we need the eggs" ... except this is only a metaphor, and the real sutuation is no joke.

@GottaLaff
I actually don't watch much MSNBC these days but decided to watch Lawrence last night.
I am so glad I did!
I hope he has gotten his fellow "journalists" attention. He is an old school reporter and that's exactly what we need in these dangerous times.
@GottaLaff "the vast well of stupidity that takes up most of his brain" I loled
@grtyvr That was classic Lawrence, although I have to disagree that Trump has a brain to begin with.

@GottaLaff fantastic segment!

After he complained about the news media “… including THIS NETWORK…”, my wife said, I wonder if he’ll still have a job tomorrow.

We loved the show. Must see!!

@dashrb He will.

He gets ratings.

@GottaLaff wow!! Powerful statements indeed!
@GottaLaff Well, there will be no "but her emails" this time ....

@GottaLaff

Lawrence was on fire & spot on.

The Harris speech was so good.

@fitzscott Both are so damn good and getting even better
@GottaLaff Now, why does Lawrence believe it was a mistake, or maybe he just won't call out the media conglomerates who are backing Trump. 🤔
@venitamathias But he did, and always does
