I love the Apple IIGS. It’s a great computer, but could it have been greater? The legend goes that Apple purposefully underclocked its CPU during development to avoid competing with the Macintosh. But is it actually true? Join me for a deep dive into the IIGS architecture, the life of the 65816 CPU, and the ghosts of keynotes past. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDUQEKxfGEw

@kefkafloyd The IIgs remains my favorite retro computer. Thanks for the in-depth look at why it only runs at 2.8 MHz!

@kefkafloyd @joesteel

IIGS was 16 bit and color, while I think the Mac at the time was still monochrome and arguably 16/32 bit sorta- it might have evened out more.

It was the LaserWriter that sold me on the Mac. I didn’t see a IIGS in the wild until the mid to late 90s where it already seemed a bit quaint. I think its monitor was a bit subpar to color Mac’s too.

@Chancerubbage @joesteel The IIGS traded resolution for color (though as mentioned elsewhere the VGC could have had a second page that gave it some more color depth at SHR). Its RGB monitor isn't bad, but it's not as crisp as the monochrome Mac monitor. By the time color macs were common (1990 or so) they were doing 640x480 at 16 or 256 colors (or more if you upgraded cards/added VRAM).
