This country has ceded the moral high ground to religious conservatives for far too long. They never had it and their adoration for Donald fucking Trump of all people proves it. It's time to point out the obvious: they're the ones whose minds are in the gutter, constantly worrying about women having the right to have sex without procreation, what consenting adults do in their own bedrooms and who’s got what genitals.

@Moltz Their entire line about the “innocence” and “purity” of the youth is all about control, and not just physically, but socially, culturally, *philosophically*. If it were widely accepted that young people (but especially children) are vulnerable, impressionable, and mentally incompetent, then they would be much easier to dehumanise, deprive of human rights, and subject to abuse.

And, so it has.

@Moltz You know, these notions were challenged during the height of the Sexual Revolution and the gay liberation movement of the 1970s and continued well into the eighties. Then, some high-profile murders and sex crimes occurred, and the reactionaries of the day seized on the opportunity to institute legal protections for young people whilst moral-panicking about the gays. Such legal protections, though, tend to slide all too easily into legal repression.
