Okay, I’m really bad at remembering, but it’s still #DisabilityPrideMonth! Each year, I see folks say they are not proud to be #disabled; they’d rather be non-disabled. And you know what? I get that. Because even within a social model of #disability, my body can be unkind to me in a way that no amount of inclusive attitudes and better design can fix. Pride doesn’t need to be in disability itself though. … (🧵1/2)
#Disability pride is in our accomplishments, our inside jokes, our community & care for each other as society ignores us or actively attacks us/our worth. It’s pride in a culture of the historical “uglies” that we’ve made beautiful. And it’s about our glorious audacity to continue to exist. If I have to play life in hard mode, you’re damn right I’m going to be proud of myself and my team for the job we’re doing. So Happy #DisabilityPrideMonth, #CripClub! You’re my people. I’m proud of you!(🧵2/2)
