I think @MarSolRivas will like this one… The multi-coloured Volkswagen Polo Harlequin (yes, it really did leave the factory like that) has come up a few times in comments on my previous posts but I think this is the first time I’ve seen one for real since I lived in Germany back in the nineties. Snapped yesterday at this year’s Festival of the Unexceptional in Lincolnshire.

@davidwilkins @MarSolRivas there's cars like that around here. They did not leave the factory like that
@davidwilkins I call it the Polo Colorblind 😑
@MarSolRivas Apparently the British registration authorities classify it as ‘multi-coloured’…
@davidwilkins 😅 The French reg system requires the color be described by hue and shade, so if the car is white you still have to tick one of the shade boxes, hence white cars are "blanc clair" and black cars are "noir foncé" 😄
@davidwilkins @MarSolRivas I always used to see the "home made" versions with people painting their panels but never an original
@davidwilkins @MarSolRivas I was on holidays in Germany in the late nineties. I walked past one in someone’s driveway, never seen one before. I walked back for a second look. They’re bonkers, but somehow in a controlled German way.
@davidwilkins THAT IS NOT UNEXCEPTIONAL! That is the best Polo ever! 😍
@vwdasher @davidwilkins well a single cab pick up won the event’s concourse even though the thing is billed as being about family cars.
@CrackedWindscreen @davidwilkins 🤔 that really does not gel with me
@vwdasher @CrackedWindscreen Yes - that decision for the pick-up seems to have been a bit controversial!
@davidwilkins @MarSolRivas
Never cared much for color, go, stop & turn were more attractive.

@davidwilkins @MarSolRivas Love those, and reminds me of this ad:

@davidwilkins I wish I could have been there, but I wasn't. My Brother in Law was, though (the bastard! 😜 ) !@MarSolRivas
@davidwilkins @MarSolRivas Oh I remember these! Someone local to me had one back in the day. Always brought a smile to my face 😊
@davidwilkins @MarSolRivas Around 1967/68, I saw a Triumph Herald in Hove that was similar colours. Probably a bit more swirly, given the era I saw it.
It wasn’t paint, though: it had been covered in glued-on flock (like ground up Fuzzy Felt).
Wonder what happened when it rained?
@davidwilkins @MarSolRivas We had one in my town where I grew up, I always admired it. Any stats on how many were produced?

What started life as a sales gimmick, became one of the must-have cars of the 1990s. At least, that's how we remember the VW Polo Harlequin.
