Marty Day@hotdogsladies I’ve had this explained to me recently. Basically, your Mastodon instance caches the link preview. Since Mastodon.social is in Germany, you’re getting the German preview, which mentions cookies and whatnot.

Kevin H@hotdogsladies I can’t find anything to back it up but I’m assuming they host in Germany, probably with Hetzner. My instance hachyderm.io does the same thing making embeds into German, and that’s where they are hosted.

All links shared count the same number of characters (23?), so long URLs are not punished.
(Edit: sorry it is not a direct answer to your question. I assume ivory blocks redirected links for some phishing reason, but 🤷🏼♂️)

Dr. Drang@hotdogsladies They are working, just not as fast as you’d like. The process that generates the preview is queued up to run after your toot is published. Depending on server load (and maybe some other things), that may be quite a while. In the meantime, there’s typically a placeholder for the preview, the language of which depends on where the server is located. I always see a French placeholder.
