The U.S. government plans to add 307 surveillance towers at the Mexico border.

Israel’s largest weapons manufacturer, Elbit Systems, would be awarded $23.9 million to build them.

“For years, Israeli companies have been at the forefront of developing surveillance technology. They test it out on Palestinians and then export it to the rest of the world,” said Petra Molnar of York University’s Refugee Law Lab.

Surveillance towers at the U.S.-Mexico border are part of a “deterrence” policy that President Joe Biden has continued.

The nonprofit No More Deaths says that this strategy “intentionally funnels” migrants into taking deadly routes.

More than 600 people died or went missing in 2023 trying to cross the border, according to the International Organization for Migration.
