On this day, in 1969, for the first time in thousands of years of human history, people walked on the surface of a celestial body that was not our world.

First, tentative steps out of the cradle by those who really did go where no-one has gone before...

@LordWoolamaloo I can't overstate how great it feels to have been alive on that day.
@Eetschrijver I was alive, but just a baby! Child of the Space Age, grew up with posters of Gagarin and Armstrong on my walls instead of sports celebs. Still dreaming of someone in the far future posting about it being the anniversary of the first time a human said "warp speed" & we travelled beyond our own backyard (a geek can dream....)
@LordWoolamaloo Oh, I know. I was fourteen when Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon and was convinced that we'd reach the stars in my lifetime. How different things turned out...
@LordWoolamaloo I really wish I was alive to have watched it live
@gavinisdie I was alive, but only a year and a bit old! Child of the Space Age, grew up with posters of Gagarin and Armstrong on my bedroom wall instead of footballers.
@LordWoolamaloo Somewhat poetic, we have a full moon tonight here in Denmark.
