There haven’t been enough #SheepOfMastodon recently (imo) so here’s a pic from a walk the other week, while there were still a few chonky lambs about.
@helenclayton answering the call more #SheepOfMastodon (though picture was taken in April last year)
@marjolica oh they are beautiful and chocolatey! Thank you. I wonder what breed.
@helenclayton what breed? Very good question. I've searched through various breed lists but can't find a match. They do seem to have a distinctive bare black face though.
#SheepOfMastadon .
@marjolica I have the National Sheep Association page bookmarked 😂 but have no idea. Someone will know I’m sure. They’re beautiful, such lovely dense fleece.

@helenclayton Have some Texels! I did a rather convincing impression of a tuft of tasty grass (you should have heard me!!) and they came right over.

@Almandine oh lovely, thank you. Aren’t they solid-looking! And so friendly. I must work on my grass impression 😂

@helenclayton I agree. Have a Manx Loaghtan, spotted at Wonderwool Wales a few years ago (lovely fleece for spinning, great horns).

#SheepOfMastodon #Defaidodon

@KateCelyn thank you! It looks like very soft fleece.

@helenclayton Spinning samples : the milk chocolate one is Manx Loaghtan. The darkest is Black Welsh, pinky cream is Lincoln Longwool (I think, lost the note), the other two are cream Corriedale and grey Corriedale. Corriedale is one of my absolute favourites…

@KateCelyn I love that there is this much natural variation without need for dying. That pinkish colour is pretty. Are Black Welsh actually black or dark brown? Someone shared a pic of dark brown sheep further up the thread and we weren’t sure what they were. Might not be a British breed ofc.

@helenclayton They do look black but they’re really dark brown, and once the fleeces are processed they seem paler still.

Baaaaa:

@KateCelyn oh yes they’re really dark. Like 100% cocoa chocolate 😁

@helenclayton @KateCelyn

before i scrolled down and saw the sheep, i was wondering if you were talking about my thoughts on the future 😂

@moonrabbit @KateCelyn does your thoughts on the future involve chocolate? 😂

@helenclayton @KateCelyn

almost certainly! the darker the thoughts, the more chocolate required.

@KateCelyn We have some Lincolns, and they do have beautifully lustrous wool.
@BashStKid It’s gorgeous stuff!
@KateCelyn There is a bit of contention about the Society prioritising ‘white’ flocks and being mean about ‘black’ flocks when of course there’s no hard and fast pure breed rule.

@KateCelyn @helenclayton thanks for the photo - that's another bit learned about this wonderful world. The WikiPedia article is quite good...

@helenclayton This sheep atop Cader Idris inquired about sharing my lunch with her a couple of weeks ago. #SheepOfMastodon
@fschaap 😂 a quite up close and personal enquiry.
@helenclayton Totally agree! I took this one sailing into Zierikzee in 2007. It’s a long time ago, but the pic is still beautiful imho. #SheepOfMastodon
