"Three in four (76%) European travelers are adapting their behaviour to the #climate crisis, according to a new survey by the European Travel Commission (ETC) shared exclusively with the Guardian.

In a sign that extreme weather is weighing on the minds of travellers and industry professionals."

Whether swapping the south of France or Mallorca for the UK or Scandinavia, rising temperatures are changing habits

It's only a matter of time before the Akropolis is seasonally off limits for periods of the day as it becomes a heat danger zone. Other tourist destinations will be changed forever, here are some vacation spots in the United Stats.

We're seeing the emergence of a new category of articles: "you *must* see these places before they are changed forever by the carbon you emit traveling to them."

“I’d say tourism is one of many sectors that’s at risk from #ClimateChange,” Tejero said. “Apart from the fact that it’s causing tensions in certain areas, it needs to adapt itself to the climatic reality that’s on the way. We need to adapt the tourist sector, consider reducing it, and try to mitigate the effects of climate change before they get worse. But Spain is the EU country that’s most vulnerable to climate change and that’s not going to change in the short term.”

Public health adviser says higher temperatures caused by climate crisis pose danger for visitors not used to them

"The carbon footprint of the #tourism sector, which hovers at about 8% of planet-heating #emissions, is likely to soar as more of the world attains European and North American levels of wealth. What makes its climate impact more alarming than many other sectors of the economy is that the single biggest source of its pollution – #flying – is fiendishly difficult to decarbonise."

Post-Covid hunger for travel is taking a heavy toll on the environment amid race to net zero, say experts

I've always said cooking oil is not a solution; now finally an #aviation CEO says it like it is:

“You want everybody running around collecting fucking cooking oil?” Ryanair’s chief executive, Michael O’Leary, asked the Guardian in December. “There isn’t enough cooking oil in the world to power more than one day’s aviation.”

"At least half of 178 tourism assets around #Australia – from national parks to city attractions and airports – are facing major #ClimateRisks. And as the heat rises, so do the disruptions. Many of the country’s 620,000 tourism jobs will be under threat, according to the report from the insurance group Zurich and the economic analysts Mandala."

This is an even larger issue for Pacific island nations:

"The Pacific Islands are scattered across a vast area of ocean, with some of the clearest waters in the world, and pristine beaches and rainforests.

They are a magnet for tourism, which is vital for many of the countries’ economies.

But the region’s travel industry, and those who rely on it, are increasingly fearful of the impact of continuing climate change."

Climate change leaves future of Pacific Islands tourism 'highly uncertain'

Tourist sector bosses in the region are increasingly concerned about the impact of climate change.

@CelloMomOnCars Not sure I'd consider O’Leary as an authoritative source on what would work for truly sustainable aviation, to be honest 😜

@sindarina

But I do agree with him on the quantitative aspect:
How much fish & chips do we need to eat to power even one jetliner for the year? How many bitterballen?

Side-eye on KLM.

@CelloMomOnCars You do not, under any circumstance, 'gotta hand it to him’ 😜

Also, it's a straw man; nobody is seriously arguing that we should be fuelling planes with cooking oil alone. SAF has a multitude of feedstocks, and there's not a single target out there that aims for 100% SAF in the foreseeable future.

It's similar to saying that I run the company car on cooking oil, because it runs on 100% HVO. It's an incomplete story, and thus a dishonest one.

Picking a renewable fuel is part of a broader strategy, and should really only be used for kilometers you cannot avoid, and then ideally only when it is locally produced.

@CelloMomOnCars Oh my, I don't know whether to laugh or to cry.

I had to go read what they are: Venice, the Great Barrier Reef, the Amazon, the Dead Sea, and Glacier National Park (in Montana, USA).

That is a truly amazingly stupid list of travel destinations.

I mean, I'm planning to go look at some glaciers this year, but the ones very closest to where I live, and by a short train ride. Where would you have to be to be close to the destinations on that list?

Yes, but it really makes for great products, exclusivity and scarcity, with a deadline, wow. We will be seeing more of those.
