It’s all well and good setting up an anti-#RN coalition in #France, but it’s also a dangerous game to play longer term. You are then saying that the desires and concerns of a third of the population don’t matter. This is why those parties are rising: people feel their voice isn’t being heard.

#Immigration is going to be a much bigger issue still, in the near future (due to #climateChange). Cost of living has risen a lot (partially due to related measures). Etc.

What’s the plan to tackle those?

By that I mean: you can’t just ignore those fears. Increased taxes, reduced benefits, high costs, increased immigration (and the feeling of values and national pride being under threat). By merely saying ‘Don’t vote for them, they bad!’, traditional parties are increasingly viewed as patronising, and without any real plan to address those perceived concerns. Ignoring those concerns, not listening, term after term, just gives extremists an ever-increasing platform. We are seeing this everywhere.

It’s happening to #politics everywhere. #France, #US, #Germany, #Poland, #UK, everywhere. All down to people having that nagging feeling they are not being listened to. I like to believe most people aren’t extremist by nature, but if they can’t see a change of direction, and feel like they are trapped, their lives increasingly affected and controlled, they increasingly start to look at those who do address those concerns (and, it has to be said, also amplifying them).

#Trump #Farange #LePen

From history we think the lesson we learnt is Nazis == Bad. But we’ve forgotten the more important, more subtle lesson: #Nazis were able to rise to power due to punitive measures against Germany leading to Germans feeling a loss of status and pride, of identity, and having to face restrictive poverty. Nazis were furthermore helped by timid politicians elsewhere.

This feeling of helplessness and of being forgotten is now being repeated and we didn’t learn the lesson.

And of course the truly sad thing is that #Russia is making the most of it all, laughing as they play the tense strings.

We could easily see a huge loss of support for #Ukraine within the next 12 months, with utterly tragic outcomes for the whole world.
