Dear mastodon,

My teenager did an uh-oh.

And now we need a new computer monitor.

Previously, we would search “best gaming monitors 2024”

But now I know that #enshittification is a thing, and I trust no-site.

Can you all please recommend a non- #AI generated evaluation of best value-for-money monitors website? #Reviews

Thank you, Humans 🙏!

Dear mastodoni

— you all are awesome

within an hour I have 10 folks helping me out. 🙏

@atthenius Every monitor I have here (except one work provided one) came off the curb or from a thrift store. 🤷

@ai6yr

Others cannot aspire this level of no-waste.

❤️

I’m aiming for a more attainable for me “XXX gives you 10% off for recycling your current monitor”

@atthenius Yep, you've got to keep an eye on the curb for a few weeks before you think your teenager is going to smash your existing one 🤪

@ai6yr @atthenius

You are like my spirit animal.

My house is so full of curb finds.

Bookshelves, games, toys, dishes.... So much stuff

@atthenius really enjoying my gigabyte m32u. I think the smaller size is equally good and pretty cheap?
@jerome I don’t know anything about that the gigabyte company. You like your setup and their support?
@atthenius https://www.rtings.com has the most comprehensive reviews I've ever seen, for all of the product categories they review, and they've added monitors recently. See https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/best

@overstrike awesome! Rtings now I know
@atthenius I’ve had good experiences with rtings (https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/best/by-usage/gaming) in the past.
The 5 Best Gaming Monitors - Summer 2024: Reviews

The best gaming monitor we've tested is the Dell Alienware AW3225QF. This premium monitor features high-end perks like a 4k resolution, 240Hz refresh rate, and QD-OLED panel, providing both outstanding picture quality and gaming performance.

RTINGS.com

@atthenius Maybe Check out https://reddit.com/r/buildapc, specifically just search 'monitor' in that sub-reddit.

https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/search/?q=monitor

Still a pretty active and decent community and threads usually come with a lot of discussion of price/performance tradeoffs

@atthenius I really like the reviews from rtings. They have this page which let's you see there best recommendations in many categories including price ranges. https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/best

@atthenius sorry to hear about the uh-oh!

Here's the Consumer Reports review of gaming monitors, starting at $300, based on actual tests (I have visited their monitor testing lab!) https://www.consumerreports.org/electronics-computers/computer-monitors/gaming-monitors/recommended/c200709/

Consumer Reports
@natematias thanks! Is CR still human written? I did not realize. That is good to know !

@atthenius oh yes! Consumer Reports is still a member-funded organization with physical facilities where they comparatively test thousands of products. Here's a photo I took of one of their camera testing rigs, and one of their bicycle helmet tester.

Of reviewers, Consumer Reports are the most scientific. They don't just try things to see if they like them — they also safety test them. I got to see their standard cookie for testing ovens, and their standard dirty dishes for testing dishwashers

@atthenius I like monoprice’s monitors. They frequently have open box sales, and the prices are reasonable for the features.
@kpl that’s another company I am not familiar with — thanks!
@atthenius They’re great for charging and network cables too.

@atthenius A monitor that markets itself as a "gaming" monitor is basically charging a huge markup for marginal performance gains that are largely undetectable by the human eye in most cases.

Head to MicroCenter or NewEgg or <your favorite retailer here> dot com and search for something mid-ranged at your preferred resolution. I've not gone wrong with 3840x2160 resolution at 28".

@atthenius rtings.com seems pretty in depth and legit.

they do TVs but also monitors

@atthenius

not sure if it's cheap enough for your needs but i love the LG 27 Inch UltraFine 5K

https://amzn.to/3zkek0J

This is probably not the best for gaming (i think they want faster refresh) but it is an excellent monitor with enough resolution that you can't see the pixels, and it's wide enough you can have a reference doc on one side + what you're working on beside it.

If mine broke I'd buy it again without hesitation.

Amazon.com

@atthenius Do you have feelings about rtings.com? Last I heard they’re respectable

@atthenius
Don't put too much emphasis on the "Gaming" label as an indication of quality.

"Gaming" typically only refers to the "Refresh rate", and a 4k monitor with a 240Hz Refresh Rate is meaningless if you don't also have a video card capable of drawing 240 4K fps (frames per second.) That's some rarified air.

"Bigger is better" is also a popular misconception. Rule-of-thumb: If you have to turn your head, IT'S TOO BIG.

@MugsysRapSheet I agree. "Gaming" is code for fast response rate and top (or next to top) resolution for games. But nothing particularly fancy-pants.

I also always think about…
human eyes on average refresh is 60 Hz, and blinks are 120Hz... (medi-mastodon, disavow me of my antiquated notions if req’d)... so 240 Hz is kinda overkill.

I'm more asking about my experience as a cross windows-osx person... who sees that osx devices invariably are easy on the eyes (at least for coding if not etal).

@atthenius @MugsysRapSheet I think that is over simplified. The eye brain combo is very complex and the exact behaviour of the display technology matters a lot too. LCDs generally hold one image until they display the next which means that they don’t dim between frames which affects the ability of the brain to interpolate so apparent sharpness of moving images should be higher with frame rates greater than 60Hz. 50-60Hz is about the limit of ability to perceive the flicker with CRTs.

@atthenius I think you have plenty of advice already but:

rtings are still good for monitors as far as I can tell.

@atthenius If there is a nearby Microcenter I would trust their recommendation.

@origamislayer

I know micro center because they have strip malls near Houston. I don’t know they exist near nyc

@atthenius their site says

Westbury
Yonkers
Flushing
Brooklyn

@atthenius

Rtings is the best I know of.

@atthenius

for gaming monitors it really depends on their hardware they are using .. console or PC with dedicated graphics.

I have had good experience with ACER. But generally all LED monitors are decent. Just need to look at extras and reliability.

TLDR, need more details

@atthenius

When I was on my monitor search I watched a lot of https://www.youtube.com/@monitorsunboxed

@atthenius While I wouldn't buy very much else from them, I've had very good history with Dell monitors and am currently using a U3223QE.

Why I like them: decent inbuilt ports, so I can reduce desk clutter; VESA mount; a semi-decent stand; decent contrast; anti-glare.

Ports are a big thing for me, I really prefer having a decent hub built into the monitor.

Why it might not work for you: grey to grey is only 8ms. That's enough for me but might be a problem for some types of gaming.

@atthenius I'm pretty sure Consumers Report has reviews, but you need to be a subscriber -- or visit your local library.
@atthenius When I bought my first monitor since 15yrs, a middle class Asus. It was a bummer.
@atthenius rtings.com was till recently a solid outlet for reviews. I've used their headphones reviews extensively and I find them accurate. I've also read some of their TV reviews and they thoroughly test their gear. After a cursory check it seems they still do and it's done by humans.
@atthenius @skye I don't know what kind of a price range you have, but I'm gonna drop some links for one of my favorite nerd websites (I trust their reviews generally, and they have good guides)
