it appears that a large number of companies post fake job openings, with no intention of hiring, to keep the "morale up", and also trick existing overworked employees. They even do interviews with absolutely no intention of hiring. I have no words. https://www.resumebuilder.com/3-in-10-companies-currently-have-fake-job-posting-listed/

@djlink I'm curious if this could possibly be happening in the UK too (or Portugal), or if it's a particularly American phenomenon. We do have *slightly* more worker's rights than they do.
@nottrobin my guess is it happens a bit everywhere, I doubt this is a new phenomenon
@djlink oh yeah, a bit. But not to the tune of 40%. I've now been at hiring level in two UK-based companies and even though there's obviously stuff here I'm not happy about, I never got a sniff of this level of calculated lying. Although TBF it could have now started to happen, or happened outside my view, at my last place. They were "growth-hack"y and amoral enough.
@djlink Oh, I see. I understand where I went wrong all these years. I didn't realise that employers were the enemy, I thought we were supposed to be working towards the same goal. Egg on my face, I should have been trying to sabotage the business.
@djlink the private sector is wild
@djlink Huh. I always assumed those were about meeting the statutory requirements to hire foreign workers

@djlink I've been in a situation on a small, overworked team with two positions to refill, and after months of interviewing candidates the company announced it wasn't actually going to replace/fill the positions after all.

So not only were they (Google) wasting the candidates' time, they were wasting our time doing and reviewing the interviews.

@dotjayne Pity there isn’t a way to ding them for falsely advertising a position. @djlink
@djlink Yeah, that's a dirty secret for sure. Some folks are doing it to resume harvest. That's why I always tell folks to find someone on the inside. Network in your field so that you'll know folks who work for local companies when you need a job.
@djlink I worked for a company like this. The owner had a Jesus complex, thought he was the greatest boss in history, actually a manipulative snake oil salesman, greasy af.
@djlink This is my not-shocked face. The tech industry, the sales industry, the service industry, retail ... I'm having a hard time thinking of an industry off the top of my head that is not openly and systematically abusive to employees.
@djlink I have words I just don’t have any polite words you could say in mixed company.
@djlink this is so rude
@djlink 4 in 10 is actually really bonkers! 😵‍💫
@djlink There is nothing like a corporation in a capitalist economy to draw out the worst instincts of some people and suppress the best instincts in most people (the latter out of fear of losing their job).

@djlink

"The frustration candidates experience due to fake job postings exacerbates the already stressful job search process."

7 out of 10 HR managers being morally bankrupt is incredible but it sure does explain a lot.

@djlink Time to make some bots that send fake applications to these companies in unmanageable floods
@djlink should be illegal or trigger some kind of tax or benefit withdraw. If you post a job and it goes unfilled for months despite large numbers of applicatints, you're either incompetent or dishonest.
@djlink FFS. This should be criminal.
