I watched the Channel 4 programme tonight 'NHS in Crisis? The Debate'.

Unless I blinked and missed it... Oh just at the very end Matthew Taylor has mentioned poverty...

I was about to say no one has mentioned austerity and the impact on the population, though there was some talk on the need for prevention rather cure

Krishnan Guru-Murthy squeezed in as much as he could, but it really needed a longer programme.

To those who are determined to change the system, please note:

"There is little evidence that one particular ‘type’ of health care system or model of health care funding produces systematically better results than another. Countries predominantly try to achieve better health outcomes by improving their existing model of health care, rather than by adopting a radically different model."

It's ridiculous to expect first rate care on the cheap.

"Compared to other countries, the UK does not spend a particularly high proportion of its national wealth on health care, while a decade of historically low funding increases has left services facing huge pressures and a workforce crisis. Like... how much is spent on health is a political choice and politicians should be honest with the public about the standards of care they can expect with the levels of funding provided."

@TalktoBeverley I really hate that your politicians are trying to push you into the US model because it's really terrible ☹️

@Jennifer @TalktoBeverley The USA is to blame for the collapse of universal healthcare as they add the handing over of national health care to FTA's.

I strongly dislike the USA. The USA is our terrorist.

@shereehoneyflower @TalktoBeverley well I mean your politicians are the ones doing it, not ours

@Jennifer

I don't know where that other person is based... Canada perhaps?

I'm not prepared to click on any of the links in her feed to find out.

I just shrugged it off as a weird interjection into the conversation...

@TalktoBeverley @Jennifer I'm Australian. The USA puts FTA negotiation pressure on countries like the UK and Australia with demands of handing our health systems over to the US private health insurance companies. The orange man was stupid enough brag about this.

The US tries to have Australia's Pharmaceutical Benefits scheme abolished so prescriptions sell at high costs.

The USA is our terrorist.

@shereehoneyflower @Jennifer

Thank you. Now I get it (because of articles I've read around the consequences of Brexit.) Though I know pretty much nothing about Australian systems.

There's so much that goes on, hidden from view. People vote blind, thinking they understand. It's terrifying really.

The potential consequences of this year's elections are more frightening than I ever remember.

@TalktoBeverley @shereehoneyflower ok that makes more sense to me too, I didn't know that!! Yes my country is pretty awful in a whole lot of ways. This kind of crap is why I know we'll never get universal healthcare here. And to top it off, we're also having drug shortages for really common drugs because the US allows our awesome monopolistic system to have only one or two manufacturers for everything so everyone can make more money 😡

@Jennifer @shereehoneyflower

We have drug shortages in the UK because of the self-inflicted wound universally known as 'Brexit'.

Right-wingers who planned it promised the sun, the moon and the stars, but seem to have got away scot-free, leaving ordinary folk paying the price.
