oh no i went browsing second-hand thinkpads

the 12.5" X270 is so cute

Edit: ooh the X280

Edit 2: X280 is on its way

no thoughts head empty

thats why i need a thinkpad

My first ever computer of my very own was a ThinkPad[1] but I haven't owned another one ever since. I should really fix that.

[1] it had Win 98, even though XP was already out at the time

———
Edit: fixed that

 second-hand thinkpad ordered

Edit: it's on its way

Now comes the most important part of buying a new device: thinking of what to name it while waiting for it to arrive!

Edit: So it's a really small ThinkPad that I intend to use as a travel laptop. Therefore naming it after a migratory hummingbird would be fitting. It shall be: Eugenes after the Rivoli's hummingbird!

ThonkPad acquired
Odo activated
Yes it's a ThonkPad

The saga so far:

Ordered an X280 1080p 16GB
Received an X280 768p 16GB
Listing was incorrect
Seller has another X280 but that one has 8GB RAM and an ANSI keyboard
They say they'll switch out the displays of the two machines so that I can finally have an X280 1080p 16GB

———
Update:

They did it!

I just received the laptop, I now have a ThinkPad X280 1080p 16GB with an ISO keyboard!

Buying a decent used ThinkPad for 140€ feels really nice

Buying a new 1TB SSD for it for 70€ feels less nice

256GB is too small and 512GB is simply not good value where I looked

Finally, full size arrow keys!
It's been 84 years.

Now, why couldn't they do this for the IdeaPad line?

Speaking of keyboard layouts, Fn and Ctrl are swapped on this ThinkPad compared to my Lenovo Flex

Edit: ah, there's an option in uefi setup to swap Fn and Ctrl!

This is an interesting setting, haven't encountered this before

charging muh laptop with USB-C ✨

the future is now

I love my Bloq Mayús

this thonkpad has crossed many international borders to start its second life

Okay, so this ThinkPad has a MicroSD slot

I'm tempted to use the 1TB SSD I bought for it as an external SSD instead, buy a 256GB for the laptop and keep movies and music on an SD card

a ThonkPad in the night
@odoben I’ve never owned or interacted with a thinkpad before, so is that the red mouse thing glowing?
@DiodeHyena No, it's the dot on the i in the ThinkPad logo on the lid (glows when it's on, pulses when suspended)
@odoben I learned that MacBook Pro, unlike my old HP, doesn't allow you to insert the SD Card inside fully, the standard size SD card will pop up. Now I’m considering if I hould get one of these funny shaped SD cards that are designed to sit flush within a mac…

@Sominemo My other Lenovo also has one of those readers where half the card sticks out

This one though

@odoben Just a notice, if you ever considered that most thinkpads will not allow you to boot directly from an SD card

@odoben Most latops I've had has an option to adjust the APU memory. It uses the dedicated RAM for video cache.

My server also has an option for that

@odoben I need to get a bigger SSD for my ThinkPad.

It’s dual SSDs work kinda ok, but I’d rather just one big one x3

@odoben big flipperpaws vs smol trackpoint let's heckin gooooooo

@rail_ Alas, I don't think there's a species with that scientific name

That's my theme for hostnames

@odoben yooooo
@rail_ X280 1080p i5-8350U 16GB/256GB

@odoben ah almost the same as mine, I'm stuck with 8gb of ram

Also: please I'm begging you do not remove comments rather than editing. It wouldn't be the first time I couldn't reply to your post because you deleted it in the meantime 🙈

@odoben @rail_ hey that's not too far from what I got also 2nd hand (T490, i5-8265U, 24/512)
@rail_ aaand it's not actually 1080p, it's 768p
The listing was incorrect.
@odoben 💀💀💀
@rail_ Yup, will be returning this. And hope to find a 1080p one around the same price.
@rail_ (Spoiler: that will probably be very difficult, this was an unusually good deal)
@odoben can't you just demand a replacement from the seller?
@rail_ They don't have another one. Well, they do have one that's also listed as 1080p so it could actually be 1080p (lol) but it has an ANSI keyboard which is terrible for a HU layout.
@odoben guhhhhhh >:C

@rail_ Hmm, there are some good deals for 14" ThinkPads though

And 13.3"

@rail_ Okay so the ANSI one is in fact 1080p, at least they're saying they've just checked

So the question is do I accept their offer to change it out for that one. Or do I look for something else.

Edit: I'll see if I can get them to swap out the keyboards in the two laptops and give me the 1080p one with the ISO layout

@rail_ Except they also messed up the listing for the ANSI one because the title says 16GB but in the photo it clearly shows 8192M in the setup 💀
@odoben @rail_ At that point I'd ignore that seller
@exec @rail_ It's frustrating because they have a lot of ThinkPads at really good prices. Maybe I could try to get them to swap out the screens instead of the keyboards.
@exec @rail_ I'll ask if they're willing to swap out the displays instead. They sold me a device they don't have so the least they could do is create that device 🤡

@exec @rail_ Update: they'll swap out the displays so I can have what I ordered

Also this is not an individual seller but a small company and they have 1837 positive, 2 neutral and 0 negative reviews, so I'll be generous and assume this whole thing was because of some communication error

@exec @rail_ They did it! I now have an X280 1080p 16GB with an ISO keyboard!
@odoben @rail_ no way they still sell 1366x768 thinkpads
@exec @odoben tho do, which is very fucking odd and laughable but yea
@rail_ @exec To be fair it's a model from around 2018 but still
@odoben unfortunately I can attest that owning a ThinkPad doesn't increase the number nor quality of your thoughts
@rail_ that's okay it can think in my place
