Mozilla, please go back providing a good browser and stop doing all the other shit. I need a browser from you and the developer Network - that’s it. Why do you pivot to AI and advertising? There is no ethical advertising and the moment you provide targeting there is no privacy friendly advertising.

Sincerely, a user

@jascha i switched to librewolf which is like a cromium version but for firefox.
But all the semi useful stuff like pocket is gone
@jascha i would also welcome a free, community moderated top level domain. Last free domain names options like freenom got sued by meta and disappeared. No more possibility to home-host a website short of using some dyndns stuff, which is a crappy option. Domain name prices are on the rise, it would be neat. Why can a supermarket get its own top domain name that they barely use ( .leclerc sites for example) while the open web get stuck with commercial options only.
@Laloutre I am with you but this is _another_ issue which has with this issue only to do at the side.
@jascha i meant that if they are bored with only developing a browser (understandable) there are more interesting and less destructive options to pursue than so called AI and advertising.
@jascha The problem is the necessary income stream beyond the Google’s default browser payment. If they don’t diversify their income before Google inevitably pulls that money they’re going to be in a really bad position. They just have not been able to figure it out in ethical way that aligned with their messaging.
@veedems @jascha
This. They need something to pay the bills for developing the browser. Donations are not going to do it.
@jascha
This is presumably because they acquired anonym?

@jascha I get you 100% but at the same time Mozilla Foundation keeps ~750 people in employment. And much as I love their products and would even be prepared to pay for Firefox, I expect most people wouldn't.

So they need to generate income somehow. They could hold out a permanent begging bowl like Wikimedia Foundation has to, or they could take money from the likes of Google (which is what they do at the moment), or they could make money from non-tracking advertising, which is what they're proposing.

If you have better ideas for keeping 750 skilled, ethical engineers in well-paid jobs producing an amazing product, please do share!

@jascha The answer is that they're desperately trying to find a way to fund development of said browser without needing a perpetual search partnership with Google. They're throwing stuff at the wall to see if any will stick to make it self-sustaining.
@rexana @jascha It won't. They'd be better off charging for access to the browser -- at which point everyone would just switch to Chrome, no matter how shitty it is, because it's free.
@jascha and Thunderbird, the world needs not-webmail options!
@jascha I wish, but no. Mozilla lost its soul ages ago. Their current leadership brought them to this point, and they're not leaving.

@jascha
Firefox's largest source of funding has always been Google, and thus advertising.

They've been trying to drum up alternative revenue with donations, Pocket, VPN, and Relay but it's too low.

So I understand what they're trying to do. But how long before Anonym decides they can make more money by invading privacy and then lying about it? One year? Five? Ten?

And even if they never invade privacy, how can end users trust them?

@jascha
Hi. @vivaldibrowser user here. Firefox poopy... a majority of the time. Vivaldi is not poopy... 99% of the time.

.. I mean it may be based off of Chromium, but it's transparent with what it does and what it wants.

@jascha Mozilla's board don't give a shit about users. They're in for the money and are just burning down Firefox reputation until there's nothing left. Then they'll move to burn another project in the same way. Fucking parasites.
@jascha maybe librewolf interests you
