here we go
also, shoutout to this glinet travel router thing for letting me work with the server even when it's on my dining room table, far away from any ethernet ports
okay, i could have run a long cable from the switch behind the tv, but that sucks
thank you all for your package juice. it all worked out

@IntrepidVector https://www.gl-inet.com/ sells some nice openwrt-preinstalled-routers, but, admittedly, this is a trick you can do with basically any wifi router with ethernet ports- set it to repeat or bridge your home wifi network and it'll do the right thing with its ethernet ports

@BestGirlGrace so is a "travel" router one that is also a cellular hotspot, or…?
@IntrepidVector They make those! glinet does sell routers you can put a SIM card in (or that you can tether to your phone) and do cellular stuff from, but in general, a "travel" router is just, like, a small one. The idea is that you can take it to your hotel room and set up a little local network for whatever reason. Maybe you need to work with a device that needs to be plugged into ethernet and the hotel doesn't provide any. maybe you want your own little network separate from the hotel's. Maybe you want to have a little LAN party with all your friends playing TF2 or whatever against each other over wifi. Maybe you want something that automatically puts all its traffic over a VPN for work/privacy/connecting-to-homenet reasons. All niche, but sometimes pretty handy.

@BestGirlGrace the classic #Slimline #SATA caddy to the rescue...

@BestGirlGrace ayy nice! I was planning on getting something like that for one of my servers.

Though now that I think about it, if it just needs a laptop optical drive sled, I literally have one of those laying around from a previous laptop that died. Not sure that didn't click earlier haha.

@melody Happy to help! I think they also make proper 3.5" to 2.5" bay adapters, but this was easier in a pinch.

This one happened to work because the server had an empty optical drive bay- it's using the optical drive power and data lines. Works great, though.

@BestGirlGrace oh I've got some 3.5" to 2.5" sleds! The particular server I'm thinking of has 4 3.5" slots and an optical drive that I'll never use.

If I can use all 4 for bulk storage and replace the optical drive with an SSD for booting, it would make either a good storage server or a great media server lol.
@melody Ayyy, there you go! That's a good point- if this is basically a free drive slot on top of the four bays, that's a whole other hard drive I can fit in here. Bonus.
@BestGirlGrace it's free drive real estate!

@BestGirlGrace
What's in the package?

Is it a dildo?

Is the delivery man delivering a dildo?

Is this a post about the #DildoDeliveryDude?

I still remember #DildoWatch2023...

@Nuki sadly, it's just some hard drive stuff.
@BestGirlGrace
Girl, you need to get something hard to drive into somewhere, that's for sure. :V
