So apparently the city of Portland is giving away free air conditioners this summer? You have to qualify under a household income threshold but it looks like you've got at least a 1 in 3 change of qualifying https://www.kgw.com/article/news/local/portland-free-air-conditioning-units-311/283-24361b3a-f195-4c31-82d6-481a6533345e
@mcc This is good! With higher temperatures, A/C is necessary. If there's forest fire smoke, open windows are genuinely hazardous to your health.
@unicorndeburgh @mcc Embers in your AC system aren't great though.
@unicorndeburgh @mcc I sincerely doubt A/C's become the norm in Germany and at up to €0,60/kWh they are potentially bankrupting households...
@mcc It’s also cheaper than hospitalizing or burying those who suffer or die from the heat.

@Catawu NYT had an article on this. Lots of people die at home!

@mcc

@Kencf618033 @mcc It’s brutal to realize how people literally bake to death in their own homes. Giving them AC units helps, but also, need to get a grip on power companies that have been gouging customers and making them afraid to use the very thing that will save their life. It’s not a luxury, it’s a life necessity.
@mcc
Sounds like these might be portable heat pumps! The state might be using funds from the Inflation Reduction Act to distribute them at no/low cost. Stay cool, Portland!
@kerrytani @mcc but stay off the streets as they'll be even hotter
@mcc This… looks like the wrong Portland.
@mtothevizzah Depends on which Portland you're in, I suppose?
