I will only say I remain very disappointed in VIU Admin's approach.

VIU Admin letter:
"Dear VIU community,
Today, Vancouver Island University (VIU) held a follow-up meeting with the Students for Palestine Committee and the Palestine Solidarity Encampment (PSE) to continue the dialogue from our initial meeting last week.

As promised in our initial meeting, VIU came prepared for a mutually respectful dialogue, ready to discuss the item identified by PSE as the core issue of the encampment: the disclosure of our investments.
VIU came to the meeting prepared to be open, collaborative and continue the dialogue in good faith. We had made some progress after the first meeting and hoped to see that continue. We requested that the PSE provide assurances that they would not disrupt the upcoming convocation events. This assurance was sought as a sign of their good faith in working collaboratively with the administration towards a successful resolution. However, the PSE indicated that they would not provide any assurance that convocation would be free of disruption, which led to the meeting ending without discussing any further items.

While VIU firmly supports the right to protest and the right to freedom of assembly, we stress the profound significance of convocation. Convocation is a foundational community event for the entire campus community. It is a celebration of the culmination of our students’ hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Ensuring that this celebration can proceed without disruption is central to VIU’s mandate of providing a quality educational experience for our students and their families.
VIU remains committed to fostering an environment where open dialogue and mutual respect guide our interactions. We hope to continue dialogue with the PSE to address their concerns while upholding the values and traditions that define our university community. We will continue to update the campus community."

VIU Palestine Solidarity Encampment on Instagram: "PSE Statement Regarding VIU’s Departure from June 10 Discussions [Nanaimo, 10/06/2024] On Thursday, June 6th, the Palestine Solidarity Encampment (PSE) met for the first time with representatives of the Leadership Team for Vancouver Island University (VIU). A second meeting was scheduled for June 10th in order to provide the VIU team with time to prepare requested documentation supporting their statement that “VIU has…. completed a thorough review of (their) investments (and) has no associations or investments with any institutions or companies with ties to the conflict.” In the second meeting between the PSE and representatives of the VIU Leadership team, negotiations broke down in under 30 minutes when the VIU team walked away from the table. Their stated rationale was that they were not willing to have further discussion unless the PSE formally committed to take no actions which might disrupt the upcoming university convocation, commencing Wednesday, May 12. This was a shocking development for two reasons: 1) No mention was made of this condition to recommencement of discussions in the June 6 VIU email to the PSE, which stated explicitly: “The purpose of this meeting would be to complete our dialogue about your investment demands and set the stage for convening future meetings.” Indeed, the only mention of convocation in the June 6 meeting was as one of the several issues that have been keeping the Administration team very busy in recent days. 2) Promising to discuss one major issue in order to recommence talks, and then without notice predicating that commitment on a different issue is the very definition of bad faith bargaining.
