Given that Math Notes are available on iOS 18 too, so far, I count exactly *two* exclusive iPadOS 18 features:

- Redesigned tab bars
- Apple Pencil Smart Script

Operating system for $2,000 computer. Two exclusive new features.

Makes sense. 👍

@viticci really regretting I’m past my window of return for my 13 inch iPad Pro. Should have just kept my M1 Pro.
@unclekyle @viticci Given the history of the iPad: what did you expect guys? They’ll probably drop some half-baked features next year, then wait another 3 years before they do it again. See how well Stage Manager is doing?
@viticci While I appreciate your sentiment, I think it’d be a mistake to artificially limit features to the iPad when they could also be on the iPhone. Feature parity between Mac and iOS/iPadOS is more difficult because the operating systems are that much more different.
Also, we can't overstate how much better even cross-device features are on the larger iPad screen. Enough to justify the price difference? Maybe, maybe not, but to me it is. And the more that is cross-device, the better, IMO.
@Jasonact I stand by this and I don't have anything more to add: https://www.macstories.net/stories/not-an-ipad-pro-review/
Not an iPad Pro Review: Why iPadOS Still Doesn’t Get the Basics Right - MacStories

Let me cut to the chase: sadly, I don't have a new iPad Pro to review today on MacStories. I was able to try one in London last week, and, as I wrote, I came away impressed with the hardware. However, I didn't get a chance to use a new iPad Pro over the past

MacStories - Apple news, app reviews, and stories by Federico Viticci and friends.
@viticci sure am glad Apple “split” iPadOS from iOS so they could devote more resources to it!
@viticci did you buy the cheap one or something? 😜 Cause the one in my basket is €3,200
@stroughtonsmith @viticci No sales tax + strong currency is working in our favor over on this side 😅
@viticci I was waiting to see what they announced before buying an M4 Pro, and I just don’t think I can bring myself to spend the money based on this. I like much about the platform, but I have no interest in buying into an OS which has this little attention despite the glaring issues.
@viticci Like they do with the iPhone every year, I think Apple is holding back new iPadOS features until they release new… aw, shit.
@willhbr @viticci At least with the iPads last month, we sort of excused it because we expected something at WWDC. But now, there’s essentially zero hope until June 2025.
@jdechko IMO there hasn't been much promise of significant additional capabilities for iPadOS since like 2021 or so, the trend of improvement between iOS 9 to 13 just levelled off completely.
@jdechko @viticci it begs the question why the pro really exists. Is it a vanity product? In your article it’s summed up beautifully, WWDC ‘23 VisionPro, WWDC ‘24 AI
@viticci I feel like the Vision Pro and AI basically monopolised all of Apple’s time and resources this past year, so I wasn’t really optimistic for any new iPad-only features.

@viticci And the tab bars thing just looks like another confusing UI element bolted onto iPadOS

What problem does it even solve?

@viticci So how many features exclusive to iOS then ? Zero? For one of the most expensive smartphones in the market?
@viticci if you cut this the other way, how many unique features did the iPhone get? Or even macOS for that matter since there’s a lot of overlap. It seems like the Watch is the only thing that gets a lot of truly unique new features.
@sloenthusiast @viticci Or VisionOS out of necessity but it’s a good point.
@viticci The tile window management would have been sweet.
@ismh86 @viticci But you got stage manager 3 years ago, what are you complaining about? ;)
@viticci Hey, at least it got as much new features as the Airpods Pro😉

@viticci I suspect that Math Notes was an iPad first thing, that was easily ported to iOS. I suspect other features might have started on iPadOS, and then easily moved to iOS.

That said, while I love my iPad Pro, I also wish that the OS would allow it to do more with the sheer potential of the hardware

@viticci Another way to look at it is that unlike in previous years where iPadOS was behind iOS, this year all the iOS features came to iPad too.
@viticci btw, Apple added Soulver, I mean Math Notes, to macOS, too.

@viticci Macs got iPhone continuity and Window Snapping as their only exclusive features

Operating system for $12,000 computer. Two exclusive “new” features.

Makes sense. 👍

@countablenewt right. Because macOS is *exactly* where iPadOS is, too.

@viticci I mean there are plenty of things macOS misses that make it worse for everyday computing just how iPadOS is missing thing that make it worse for professional computing

Both scenarios are important

@viticci the Home app sucks, Apple Music and Podcasts are missing a lot of functionality, the TV app is basically unusable, widget support is atrocious, app discovery is bad because most things are just a website

Freeform is bad, reminders is clunky

The native app ecosystem is comparatively nonexistent, even some of Apple’s stock apps aren’t fully native

Some people have completely forgotten that Siri is even on the Mac

Control center isn’t getting any of the stuff that iPad and iPhone got

System Settings???

@countablenewt @viticci however if one buys a Mac is fully productive with all things one might expect from a computer OS, so perhaps it’s ok not to be full of new features; iPadOS is not there yet for a 2000$ tablet.

@redv1ew @viticci it’s only “not there yet” for an unusual and very loud demographic talk to a normal person about this and they’ll look at you like you’re insane

Techies misinterpreted one ad years ago and now that’s iPad’s identity

@redv1ew @viticci like this is a problem like green and blue bubbles are a problem: for one weird demographic and everyone else just gets by doing what they’ve been doing for years

@viticci Steven was right about that... Apple went all-in for AI this year, leaving everything behind. And pushing Vision Pro to release also consumed probably a lot of resources during most of the year.

Maybe next time... maybe good because Apple have time to rethink the iPad, and maybe a little bit more time to polish it. Curious though if it won't be too late at that time.

@viticci I got the 13-inch M4 iPad Pro on launch day. For a device that gets a dedicated hardware event, it’s bizarre to see no attention being paid to its OS.
@viticci yes, agreed it is ridiculous. I was thinking of a new iPad. Now I think I will wait.
@viticci I was waiting to see if there were going to be any features locked to the new iPad Pros and not the new new iPad Airs - can now safely trade in my old non-M series Pro for an M series Air :-)
