3 years ago, this patch was almost all hard clay & only thing that grew was lawn grass. I've spent lots of time/effort remediating the soil as part of my longterm #rewilding personal project.

This patch is now doing quite well & has many different perennial & some edible #plants growing out of it.

@msquebanh I grew up largely in Houston on clay and dear lord I remember how stubborn it was. A massive undertaking to coax anything but crabgrass to come up.

I salute you, that is a LOT of work.

@pelielios Gypsum, compost & excellent farm aged manures were my top 3 soil remediating supplies. It took a lot of time, effort & helps to hone more patience. I'm so happy when I see more plants biodiversity in areas that used to be almost no grow spots due to poor soil conditions.
@pelielios @msquebanh Oof I feel that! My old house was built on top of clay fill that turned out to be blue, which translates to ground that is completely devoid of nutrients. We tried to dig some of it out and replace it with good soil, but that just wound up creating a pool of mud wherever it rained instead. 😰❤️

@alshra @pelielios I didn't dig much. Instead & used pickaxe & broke hard clay up into chunks. Then added gypsum, compost, manure, spread rotting wood atop & covered with cardboard. When cardboard broke down, I repeated the above. For 3 years. I'm tackling other areas & aiming to remediate all the hard clay areas so I can grow plants for more biodiversity here.

Year 2 was when I planted fava beans to boost nitrogen & also let their roots create natural aeration.

@alshra @pelielios I'm a physically disabled avid gardener so always look for less labour intensive ways to get things done in yards & gardens. I used the pickaxe, while sitting in a chair. I use an old free golf bag to store long handled garden tools because it's easier on my body to wheel the bag around & it's perfect size to store the tools.
