@SwiftOnSecurity

I have been one of these, and only returned home due to the kindness of others.

@SwiftOnSecurity This _really_ depends on which country in Europe we're talking about here.

Ireland? Sure.

Romania? Bit harder to get by.

@mdm @SwiftOnSecurity I’ll skip the obviously racist part of your comment, and just ask what you mean by “get by”?

Because I really fail to see in what universe you’d pick getting nearly murdered over losing a few quid just because of the country you’re in.

Have you actually ever been? In Romania or anywhere else in Europe for that matter?

@teotwaki @SwiftOnSecurity I really shouldn't respond to your comment (starting a conversation with an accusation about racism when you have no idea about someone's race is perhaps not the best, but I'll bite.)

Romania is literally a country that, if it's not already illegal to be LGBT in public, it soon will be.

Now, if your response is anything other than, "I hear you, understood, sorry for being too sharp," I will block you and move on.

Have a nice day.

@mdm @SwiftOnSecurity Actually, I’ll keep being an LGBT activist in Romania and block your racist and prejudiced account.
@SwiftOnSecurity 50+ people have lost it. i’d take the highwayman every time.
@SwiftOnSecurity Is this "would you rather?" or "have you ever?"?

@SwiftOnSecurity Actual odds of each seems relevant...

... like 0.01% chance to get shot at in America vs 1% chance to get pickpocketed in Europe.

(percentages completely made up ofc)

@tentacular @SwiftOnSecurity Lifetime risk of dying (not only getting shot at) in US is actually 1.1% (1 in 89), similar to dying of a car accident. For young men of color, police use of force is among the leading causes of death. Couldn't find numbers for European pickpocketing (probably not different from US). Only difference is that you could get pickpocketed multiple times, but die of gunshots only once.
@tentacular @SwiftOnSecurity Switzerland had last year 11'106 cases of pickpocketing registered. Not sure how you would calculate lifetime risk, maybe multiply by 60 years, as babys and toddlers don't get pickpocketed and elderly people also don't go to concerts? And divide by how many people? Switzerland has around 8.7 million residents, but how do we add tourists, who are even more exposed? And then calculate that for entire Europe?
@tentacular @SwiftOnSecurity or indeed "do you live in US or Europe"? I'm unlikely to get shot at in America when I'm living in Europe...
@SwiftOnSecurity
The "chance of death is as unpleasant as losing a material thing" crowd is something... Maybe the theory is that life is also material? Idk
@SwiftOnSecurity
Before the min-maxers come thru, it doesn't say whether or not you were hit by the shot, nor does it say the pickpocket stole anything of value. The question is purely of mortal and material risks
If you wouldn't rather get shot in the face, why do you hate freedom?

@SwiftOnSecurity Weirdly, I've never been pickpocketed in Europe.

I can't say the same for being shot at in the US though.

@SwiftOnSecurity I'm in Europe right now so I'm trying to be hyper aware of this
