The fastest non-Google controlled web rendering engine Servo is trying to compete with only $1.6k funding a month:

Yes, they did have an NLNet grant, but that ran out.

If we want an alternative to Blink/Chrome, we need to fund it. This is a project where even a tiny regular amount could yield oversize returns:

Servo Web Engine Continues Advancing But Seeing Just $1.6k In Monthly Donations

470 boosts and 368 likes? Y'all are crazy!

I just hope some of you are also ponying up even a dollar or two to help the servo project out.

Either way, I appreciate your help getting the word out!

@Blort just started being a backer

@mrt181

Thank you for helping to make the web a better place!

@Blort There is also ladybird https://ladybird.dev/ which is pretty cool as well
The Ladybird browser project

@sotolf @Blort is it though? is it?
@zbrown @sotolf @Blort didn’t this turn out to be run by someone with some questionable 4chan leanings or something?
@wiredfire @zbrown @Blort Yeah, Andreas turned out to be someone that seems to have quite a white priviledge, "your existance is politics", but I didn't know that when I posted this comment.
@Blort Oh, they have GitHub sponsorship and Open Collective, nice!
@Blort igalia employs multiple people to work on servo full time right?
@Blort (for reference, igalia is a worker-owned cooperative that i believe is the top outside contributor to both webkit and chromium)
@leo @Blort Woah, i didnt know Igalia was a coop. so cool!
@leo @Blort I don’t have precise numbers, but from what I’ve heard in conference presentations and looking at the “this month in Servo” posts, it doesn’t look like there’s more than one or maybe two Igalia people working on it full time.
@Blort Seems like a project @mozilla would fund. ... oooooh wait...
@Blort
Gecko isn't good enough?
@Blort I would be a lot more enthusiastic about Servo if it put a larger focus on supporting old/limited devices that the big browser engines don't.

@csepp @Blort i think that kinda goes against being the fastest xd

a single threaded application may be better for a pentium 4, but id rather use something multithreaded on my ryzen 7 cpu lol

@Blort Doesn't WebKit count as a non-Google controlled web rendering engine?
@mats @Blort probably better to say "non-bigtech"
@Blort we should see governments recognising the importance of core software codebase diversity - key open source codebases like Servo should be treated as crucial digital infrastructure and be funded cooperatively by gov'ts like, for example, national contributions to the UN or NATO, with those funds distributed as grants by an independent (uncaptured-by-corps) council who assess worthiness of #Libre technologies. To be clear, proprietary software should be ineligible to receive such funding.

@Blort ideally such software should only be licensed under a Copyleft license - a weaker license allows it to be 'closed' by proprietary interests, effectively allowing them to exploit the commons for private gain.

(And if you're unfamiliar with my argument against proprietary software, see https://davelane.nz/proprietary)

Reflections on Proprietary Software

I've been pondering proprietary software for the past couple decades.

@Blort I was not aware how bad their budget is. I /love/ what amazing stuff they're doing, they got my support now!
@Blort is gecko a joke to you?
@Blort Thanks for the reminder. I sponsored ladybird yesterday and meant to adjust sponsor servo but forgot. Just did it.
@Blort a web tooling project with a decent CoC? sounds too good to be true lol
@Blort i was about to say "why doesn't mozilla fund it" then learned that it's not a mozilla project anymore and they laid off all the devs.

@Blort

#mozilla is just the geek-friendly PR dept of #Google.

I won't give a dime, till they take Google dollars (or run their services over #AWS).
