Have I ever mentioned how much I love this grape? From a favorite producer, it sports a fresh feel, fine aromatics and flavor. This unoaked dry white is not as flamboyant as some can be, but it is balanced, crisp and elegant. It still has big flavor and nice aromatics, but this year emphasizes structure. It seems to be holding nicely (I usually want to drink these in 3 or 4 years; this will do better). For about $20, it is a perfect summer white. #wine #winesofgreece @alpha_estate
@marksquires As you should. We are so risk adverse to wine names that are difficult to pronounce. I have had this one numerous times!
@SwellWines It's all Greek to me. 🤪 The iconic producer is probably Gerovassiliou (good luck!). It is spreading fast. This from Alpha is excellent--but what isn't from Alpha?-- and better than I originally thought the first time I saw it when it was not far off bottling. It has surprised me with how well it developed. These are not typically famous for their structure, but for their flavor and aromatics. I call this a cut above. #wine #greece
@marksquires Smart to try to anglicize their name as much as possible.
@SwellWines I kinda disagree. I think it is good to maintain your identity. Acceptance takes longer, but I also think there is more enduring success when you have an identity. That one you are drinking--the first USA importer marketed it as Papa John. Didn't help. Eventually, importer dropped it. I won't say the cute name was the reason it failed, but changing the name sure didn't help. #wine
@marksquires Yes, but there is a way to do both. If you notice on mine, Domaine Papagiannakos is in smaller type at the bottom, but the proprietary name is bolder above. Sometimes allowances need to be made. 🤷‍♂️
@marksquires I odered a bottle based on your post and am drinking it right now. 2015 vintage, but it's still excellent. Refreshing, crisp and balanced indeed. Thank you for a wonderful recommendation!

@tofu I am really glad that worked out, but keep in mind most people in Greece will drink these within one to three years. Few hold them in general for more than five on purpose. This producer does have unusually good structure for the style, but 9 years is pushing it for the grape.

I don't think I've ever had one that is 9 years old. Moschofilero has the same reputation, of course, and I had one that was over 20 and good... So you never know about stereotypes! #wine

@marksquires That was the only bottle the store I went to had in stock, but I liked it so much that I'm definitely going to look for younger ones now - I'm sure I can find it online somewhere.
