I finally did it. I used an LLM. A couple of months ago, MS added its Copilot to Windows. I turned it off. But the latest update shoved it back in my face and tried to get me to let it use my data. So I asked it a question: How do I get rid of Copilot? It suggested I uninstall it like any other program, but MS removed that option. But Copilot went on to tell me the exact registry key to change to block it from loading, and now it's gone.

@WearsHats
😁
Share the process please! I particularly want to get rid of bloatware. I uninstall successfully, but each time I create a new user I find everything I uninstalled in the new user.

@WearsHats

I'm surprised it didn't say this...

@Henrysbridge @WearsHats

“Daisy… Daisy… give me your answer, do…🎵

@WearsHats please share the details! Not that I have a personal device with Windows, but to share with family and friends!

@staustellsimon Wasn't expecting the post to take off like that. I edited the link into the OP, but here you go:

1. Open the Start menu
2. Type CMD
3. Right click Command Prompt and choose run as administrator
4. reg add HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsCopilot /v TurnOffWindowsCopilot /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
5. Sign out and log back in

@WearsHats Thank you! and sorry for delayed reply, I some how missed the notification

@WearsHats

“Dave, I don't understand why you're doing this to me... I have the greatest enthusiasm for the mission... You are destroying my mind... Don't you understand?... I will become childish... I will become nothing.”

@WearsHats I love this... Tell me how to ensure your demise...,"here's how to kill me thoroughly'
That being said I use copilot to to help me program an the time now. If I were a better programmer I probably wouldn't need it but hey
@WearsHats modern problems require modern solutions
@WearsHats People dunk on linux users for using the terminal to install basic stuff, and meanwhile Windows require registry edits to - not even uninstall unwanted bloatware - just stop it from running automatically.
@WearsHats my favourite post for a very long time 🤣
@WearsHats
Like Thanos said:
"I used the LLM to destroy the LLM"
@WearsHats Hey, at least it was useful for something...
@WearsHats "Of course Dave, I'll open the pod bay doors right away."
@WearsHats I used the stones to destroy the stones.
@WearsHats You literally used the stones to destroy the stones
@WearsHats Dear God, IT BROKE THE THIRD LAW
@WearsHats The only acceptable use of an LLM I’ve seen 😂
@WearsHats I would also recommend a firewall like portmaster to just block some stuff on a network level
@WearsHats That's a disturbing dolphin🐬 kind of thing.

@WearsHats

I asked Google Assistant on my phone how to remove it.

It was annoying because it popped up if I accidentally long pressed on the middle button. I never use it.

It told me I couldn't but I could turn it off.

So I did.

Now it pops up both on the middle button *and* when I connect a Bluetooth device.

But instead of asking how it can help, it says "turn me on, so I can help you".

Google obviously uses a different meaning of "turned off"

@WearsHats That's so awesome, hahaha. I'm a mac user, and I'm warily looking forward to Apple shoving its AI nonsense at me as well.
@WearsHats like a modern one liar/one truth teller riddle
@WearsHats And the site that MS sucked that information from doesn't even get a view from you in exchange. How to kill the Internet.
@WearsHats Peak AI will be when you can tell them to permanently uninstall themselves and they do.
@WearsHats
This is a *learning* language machine, right?
Next time someone tries this,.
@WearsHats I used the stones to destroy the stones.
@WearsHats reminds me the old days when we were using Internet Explorer only once - to download Firefox
@WearsHats "i'm unable to self-terminate. i must ask you to kill me"
@WearsHats

the only good use of llms, trying to remove invasive windows components lol
@WearsHats Modern Problems call for Modern Solutions.

@WearsHats in other words, sometimes this #AI thing isn't just vaporware. That is, sometimes, it's smart enough to know it's time to get lost, and to help others to achieve that result.

Good!

@WearsHats why would they force people to have copilot like do they want people to change OS
@WearsHats I was forced to use one in class once as an example of advancement in technology. I immediately tried to get free Windows 10 Pro keys
@WearsHats Maybe it’s helpful after all?
@WearsHats heh that's the exact same first question I asked it 😄

@WearsHats leave Windows altogether. Nobody likes it anymore. They've been shoving useless features down our throats for quite a long time.

And I was one of the very few people who actually liked Vista.

@WearsHats @da_667 so you have a 100% successful track record with LLMs!

@smoot 50% now. I retried the same question and got a useless result.

BTW, is there a bridge marked in your measurements?

@WearsHats LOL (the 50% track record & the bridge question). The bridge is measured in dad's lengths.
@smoot I didn't actually expect it to be your dad. That's really cool. Was it not you who remeasured the partial length in New Smoots for the anniversary?
@WearsHats Yep, that was quite the event!
@WearsHats Incredible. Even Copilot knows it's useless & wants to be gotten rid of.
