The Appeal to Heaven flag isn't just tied to Jan 6.

It's a Christian nationalist symbol.

Christian nationalists believe that the law of the land is not the Constitution, but instead the law of God as they interpret it.

Do you see the problem with Alito flying this flag?

@rbreich the real question is, does he? The answer is no. And that’s the problem, isn’t it?
@rbreich
Speaking as an atheist, I see a problem with his being a Roman Catholic, an especially horrific and irrational version of Xianity. Our government was designed to be secular, and not a reflection of the will of the Vicar of Christ.
@Threadbane @rbreich the “man on the street” in 1789, or 1864, or even somewhat in 1960, was likely very suspicious or even hostile towards Catholics. The idea of a SCOTUS Catholic majority would have been horrifying. How do “originalists” cope with that, or are they just in on the Papal plotting?
(Recommended reading, see the “know nothings”).
Just asking for Millard Fillmore (he’s a local)
@dan131riley @rbreich
The English had been against Roman Catholics since Henry VIII, the Archbishop of Canterbury and all that, but the writers of the Constitution were against the Divine Right of Kings itself, against ANY religious leader blessing the POTUS; instead we would elect our leaders, not have them given to us by divine birthright with the blessing of the Archbishop of the Holy See or of Canterbury. Because of the Divine Right of Kings, they were especially suspicious of the Vatican.

@Threadbane @dan131riley @rbreich

That's a fair old mangling of history. A considerable, if not a majority, of the population was Catholic still, see the reign of Mary. The Civil War was not a religious war but about authority bound to religious traditions.

The Civil War, the Commonwealth and the Restoration did away with the Divine Right of Kings and instituted the constitutional monarchy long before the War of Independence.

The 13 States was a continuation of 1381 & the Commonwealth.

@dan131riley @Threadbane @rbreich

This 2020 piece talks about how JFK overcame some Protestants' anti-Catholic fears that he would follow the Pope & that helped him win election in 1960, but afterwards conservatives, Protestant & Catholic, joined forces against liberalism.

"The conservative boogeyman proved malleable; it was Catholics in 1960 but Muslims a generation later, each apparition conjured by a zeitgeist of anti-liberalism & Christian nationalism."

The Kennedy Speech that Stoked the Rise of the Christian Right

JFK defused anti-Catholic sentiment to win the White House. But he may have succeeded too well.

@Threadbane @rbreich
Speaking as a non-believer raised in a roman catholic country, I see equally or more worrying the evangelist version of christianity, when it comes to politics.
The catholic church is a power that tries to influence politics, of course. But evangelism has paved the way to a DIY kit to build consensus and a followers base on a religious foundation that can be and is being exploited for political ambitions. Christian nationalism is more an evangelical than catholic thing.

@Eh__tweet @rbreich

The Talibangelicals are certainly no better. I find all organized religions a curse on civilization itself, from the Zionists to the Islamic jihadists to the Xians of every stripe. I have especial vitriol for the Catholics because they are very vocal against women's medical care and women's rights in general and meddle directly in US politics. Reagan even gave 1000 old men at the Vatican an embassy, as if they were a country! About the only religion I tolerate is Buddhism.

@rbreich

"Please stay tuned for our latest episode of Fun With Flags tonight, "Traitorous Flags of the Supreme Court!"

@rbreich
There’s no problem! As an originalist, his job is the interpret Bib…ah…Constitution according to the writer’s intent.

The Consti…Bible never mentions the word “abortion”.

The Bible precedes the Constitution, which then must surely be derived from the Bible.

Ipso facto, we don’t talk about abortion, no, no, no.

@Hippasus500 @rbreich meanwhile, the Bible contains a recipe for inducing abortion and says a husband can force his wife to ingest it if he suspects she's pregnant with someone else's baby.
@rbreich At the very least Alito needs to recuse himself from all cases, then retire. Why are we even discussing it? It's amazing that all checks and balances have broken down.
@FCRACoalitionEP @rbreich They haven’t been functioning properly since the end of the Second World War. Also, a decent and honest man would recuse himself and retire out of a sense of civic and moral duty, but the position of ‘Supreme Court Justice’ tends to preclude decent and honest people anyway. No, he won’t go quietly. Someone must “gently” “persuade” him to leave. Civilian casualties not a concern.

@rbreich That this, like every other completely unacceptable thing in US politics in the last 60 years will amount to nothing?

The fascists own Congress, SCOTUS, most of the state governments and a majority of the school boards.

We're 6 months from the end of America.

@rbreich Christian nationalist -> Nationalist Christians -> Nat Cs
@rbreich Alito represents and advocates for the far right wing . He is a horrible mistake.
@rbreich Oh they may get their answer from their appeal to Heaven but it may not be the one these self-righteous hypocrites expect.
@rbreich The Appeal to Heaven flag originated during the American Revolution, Robert.

@rbreich

Judges should not ventilate political nor private opinions per definition.

@rbreich I mean, isn’t this in complete conflict with his oath to uphold the Constitution?

@rbreich Or the Speaker of the House, who apparently flies it outside his office...

https://newrepublic.com/post/176861/mike-johnson-flying-christian-nationalist-flag-outside-office

Why Is Mike Johnson Flying a Christian Nationalist Flag Outside His Office?

A new report confirmed that the House speaker is displaying an “Appeal to Heaven” flag outside his door.

The New Republic
@rbreich hell yes! Oops, I said a bad word, but yes, this scares the hell out of me.

@rbreich Folks, remember that after every movement of non-conforming to any system. There are counter movements. True, in going from conforming movements, there are non-conforming ones.

The Constitution was the means of government to prevent these movements from causing insurrection and strive. It's better to talk obligingly than to just obliged blindly. Are we a thinking culture?

@rbreich
The system is broken. The Supreme Court is a joke. They need an actual code of ethics, but they are not ethical at all...
@rbreich And Speaker of the House Mike Johnson supports that flag & Christo-Fascists Whitesupremests
