&udm=14 | the disenshittification Konami code

A quick way to get an AI-free search without any extra work.

I included a link to @ActionRetro’s FrogFind, TenBlueLinks, and one of @ben’s ShareOpenly links.

I built this in like an hour.

If anyone would like to mess with this code, it has a CC0 license and is located on Glitch and Github:

Good news! udm14 now supports OpenSearch, making it easy to add as a search engine in Firefox. Thank @xerz for adding it!
@ernie @xerz there has to be a downside to this
@ernie @xerz anxiety and paranoia is sort of my jam

@ernie @xerz I added to as default to @Vivaldi by

1. visit udm14
2. right click in the search bar on that page
3. Select Add search engine from the pop up menu

@ernie @xerz @Vivaldi What do you know, "original" article has exact steps towards the end (Author also uses @Vivaldi)

I feel stupid now 🤦

How I Made Google’s “Web” View My Default Search

Forget AI. Google just created a version of its search engine free of the extra junk it has added over the past decade-plus. You just need one URL parameter.

Tedium: The Dull Side of the Internet.
@mandarvaze @xerz @Vivaldi I am the original author :)
@ernie Yes, I realized that (late)
1. Nice of you to boost my post, instead of pointing out that you already had the steps.
Thanks.
2. I now feel stupider 😢
@ernie @xerz I appreciate it a ton, I did just that even before reading this post and it worked like a charm
@ernie oooooo, let’s see how hard it is to implement an OpenSearch entry for it!

@ernie (for reference, I mean this OpenSearch, it lets you add your search engine natively into your browser)

@ernie FYI hitting enter eats the field without sending you to the search page. But clicking (or tab, enter) works great!
@ernie Also, (obviously) seems worth tagging @pluralistic in!
@ernie went to it - but javascript for me is deny-listed by default - so after I typed my search, it just searched for "undefined" :-D
@ernie This is so awesome. Thank you!
@ernie Cool idea! https://www.startpage.com/ is another alternative 🙂
Startpage - Private Search Engine. No Tracking. No Search History.

Search and browse the internet without being tracked or targeted. Startpage is the world's most private search engine. Use Startpage to protect your personal data.

@ernie it actually gives me the same results as duck duck go. So duck duck go is the way to go :D
@Fangh @ernie I do like Dabbling (how ducks feed) instead of Googling as my search verb
@ernie I guarantee that they'll disable it eventually. Google can NOT leave functional improvements alone.

Thanks @dhobern for this one!

@dolfsquare

You're welcome, but it's next to nothing, and it doesn't work on Android, but you can modify the Startpage instructions at https://support.startpage.com/hc/en-us/articles/4520868432788-Make-Startpage-your-default-search-engine-on-Firefox-mobile-Android to add one there.

It feels odd that it's not possible to create an Android addon that does this because the overrides are not supported there, but you can follow simple configuration steps to get the same result. Meanwhile, on Windows, you can't make a configured search engine the default. So the solution is different in each case.

@ernie Does this work for you on any Android browser? I can't set a paramter in Chrome for Android, but I can in Firefox. However, I don't see any change in search results there. (It does work on Desktop.)

@newstik I had to be logged in for it to work in Chrome. I think the view hasn't fully propagated yet.

I use Vivaldi, which syncs my desktop searches to the mobile apps.

@newstik once I visited the site it caught the search parameters and offered it to me in Chrome as a selectable default search.
@ernie With Chrome for Android? Ah, after a search there, yes!
@ernie
+1 Ironic use of color scheme
@n1vux Gotta have personality.

@ernie "The results are fascinating. It’s essentially #Google, minus the crap." They truly are. Almost unbelievable. – This is also in nearly perfect timing an excellent example for what @Mer__edith has said in #Hamburg: https://www.helmut-schmidt.de/aktuelles/detail/die-rede-der-zukunftspreistraegerin

@Fischkopp I linked it in the story that is linked on the site, thanks though
Google pur: Suchergebnisse ohne KI-Text, dafür weniger Werbung

Sechs Zeichen reichen, und schon erscheint Google auf dem Desktop deutlich nutzerfreundlicher. Manchmal sogar reduced to the max.

@ernie It's nice that there is a way. Nowadays duckduckgo is not bad tho.
