Hello Mastodon, After a few months break, I'm back to posting/tooting here under a new username. Here are some quick updates followed by my intro! TLDR: I'm a dad now, we're moving back to the UK, the TFTT pod has grown into a FTP media ecosystem, I'm struggling with a renewed severe depression over Gaza, I finished my PhD, and I'm writing my first book. And after those updates I've written an #Introduction of meself to those of you who don't know me.

So here goes

1/?

I'm a dad now. My kid was born on 15 October 2023 extremely prematurely (a #micropreemie) at 25 weeks. She's doing great now, but she spent the first 4.5 months of her life at the hospital. We got very lucky and will be eternally grateful to the medical workers of the Geneva University Hospitals. We also got a firsthand experience of the discrepancies in care as we got to meet parents from different backgrounds. 2/?
We're moving back to the UK. Finally. We've been in #Geneva for a number of years now but it was never our intention to stay this long. Life just happened. We decided it's best for us to move back to the UK despite the 1001 problems facing it because that's where most of our community is. If these past few years have taught me anything it's that I cannot live without a community. Or rather, I don't want to and I don't believe I'm better off without one. 3/?
We will be London-bound (or around #london for now, but we are open to living almost anywhere in the #UK as long as it is reasonably accessible to London (again, community). And by accessible I mean it takes a reasonable number of hours by public transport to get there. I am currently applying for postdocs (cultural studies/political science/related fields) and the like, so if you are part of a university that can offer a decent salary and work conditions, feel free to message me please. 4/?
The Fire These Times has grown to a team of 10. I know. Yes, 10. It's insane. The pod that I started in 2020 now has a sizeable listenership, and we are working to grow that into a media ecosystem called From the Periphery which includes 4 podcasts so far (TFTT, Politically Depressed, Hidah and Obscuristan) with at least 3 confirmed to come, an upcoming zine, a monthly hangout (for patreons), an upcoming book club (also), a weekly Palestine watch party (also), and more stuff to come. 5/?
Depressed because of #gaza Well, I guess that's self-explanatory? I had barely gotten out of my depression before October. The fact that my daughter was born this prematurely a week after Oct 7 did not help, although she brings daily joys to my life and is absolutely worth all the difficulties we went through as a family. My depression is at the 'manageable' stage, but that's been changing on and off lately. I'm cautiously optimistic that the worst is behind me though, so that's something. 6/?
I talked about it a bit in my recent TFTT episode with Nikesh Shukla, Fabie Goa and Dana El-Kurd. You can listen to it here. Or not. I'm not your dad. And even if I were, I'm an anti-authoritarian so this would be awkward. 7/? https://open.spotify.com/episode/6Tq33BJU0RR9BAbDft29VD #thefirethesetimes
160/ Raising a Brown Child in a Time of Genocide w/ Nikesh Shukla

Listen to this episode from The Fire These Times: Voices from the Periphery on Spotify. For episode 160, Dana El Kurd, Fabien Goa and Elia Ayoub are joined by Nikesh Shukla to discuss his book 'Brown Baby: A Memoir of Race, Family and Home' which the three of us read with Gaza on our mind (although it was written in 2021 and is not on Palestine). More broadly, we talked about what it's like to raise a brown kid in a world where racialized lives are easily disposable. On Brown Baby: From the editor of The Good Immigrant. We have to believe in hope in these dark uncertain times. Hope brings us together. How do you find hope and even joy in a world that is racist, sexist and facing climate crisis? How do you prepare your children for it, but also fill them with all the boundlessness and eccentricity that they deserve and that life has to offer? Nikesh Shukla explores themes of racism, feminism, parenting and our shifting ideas of home. This heartbreaking, compelling, intensely relatable memoir is a love letter to the author’s late mother – who passed away just before his eldest daughter was born – and to his two young daughters. In Brown Baby, Shukla examines, with humour and sharp, beautiful prose, how to raise the next generation with a sense of joy in an often bleak world. PhD is done. Yep, done. Finished. Basta. Khalas. It's over. I defended it last summer and got one of those fancy latin distinction thingies from the University of Zurich, danke very much. It will be turned into a book at some point, and I'm integrating parts of it in my first book anyway. Which brings me to: 8/?
I am writing a book. I know. I KNOW. I am very excited (depression notwithstanding) and I'm grateful to have found an amazing lit agent in Salma Begun at the Greyhound Literary Agency thanks to Nikesh Shukla thanks to Musa Okwonga. I don't have a timeline for the book yet, but I will have more news in the coming months. It will be on Lebanon, Syria and Israel-Palestine. A collection of interrelated essays on difficult topics that I'm hoping to make more accessible to a wider audience. 9/?

Now some quick intros:

What's your name or preferred username? Elia Ayoub. I used to go by a different first name, but it's now Elia, pronounced E-lee-yah (like Elia Suleiman, the director). Not Elia as in Ee-lie-a, although that's fine too. You can also call me Gandalf the Awkward, but that would be awkward. 10/?

Where are you from? The not-10,000-words- answer is Lebanon, and Palestine, and kinda Italy and Argentina, and I guess France but not really. I feel closest to Lebanon and the UK (I've never been to Israel-Palestine, because of the whole apartheid & settler colonialism bit) 11/?
What are your interests or hobbies? I don't know. I like walking my dogs, but I also have to walk my dogs otherwise they pee and poop in my house. I read a lot and listen to a lot (probably too many) of podcasts and audio books. I also love gardening, but we don't have one at the moment so haven't done that in a while. I'm a decent cook too, mostly Mediterranean cuisine because I'm a walking cliché. 12/?
Lebanese cuisine is obviously the best, but I'm also just saying that so that they don't take my passport away. I mean, who can live without that sweet Lebanese passport that gives you access to nowhere? Ok anyway, I'm also into Star Trek a lot, and I used to take semi-professional photos even though I haven't done that in a long time but I still have my camera and who knows maybe one day I will do that again. Inshallah. I'm also a terrible singer but my kid likes it so shut up. 13/?
What do you do for work or study? Mostly worry. In my defense, I work/study/research very light topics such as postwar memory, international #authoritarianism and #futurisms that go beyond the #climate apocalypse. I also spend quite some time studying the way #patriarchy and neoliberal #capitalism and extractive economies and the nation state makes everything really stupid and dangerous. So yes, I worry for a living. 14/?
What kind of content do you plan to post about? The cheerful stuff I just mentioned, mostly. Maybe pics of my dogs too. 15/?
What are your favorite books or authors? #thefirethesetimes is named after #jamesbaldwin 'The Fire Next Time', so James Baldwin. I'm also a big fan of #bellhooks #OctaviaButler #adriennemareebrown, #ursulakleguin A recent favorite nonfiction book of mine is #naomiklein 's Doppleganger and, in terms of fiction, I'm currently reading and enjoying #sinanantoon 's The Book of Collateral Damage. 16/?
Do you have any favorite movies or TV shows? Arrival and The Seventh Seal, anything #Ghibli #StudioGhibli (but especially Kiki's Delivery Service and Spirited Away). 17/?
TV shows not really, besides #startrek . Other than that it is mostly light entertainment as my work is often heavy enough. Re-watched The Good Place recently. I kinda know all of Friends by heart, as it's basically how I learned English growing up. Big fan of The Office (US) too. My partner and I also have a tradition of watching Taskmaster and Would I Lie To You. Okay fine, a few TV shows then. 18/?

What kind of music do you enjoy? I have a boring answer here as it's almost anything. I go through phases, like a normal millennial.

Do you have any pets? If so, what kind? Two dogs, the annoying kind.

19/?

What languages do you speak or are learning? I grew up with Lebanese Arabic, French and English. My Spanish is decent, my Italian less decent. I also have super basic knowledge of German and Hebrew. I can also grunt in Klingon but tbf Klingon is mainly grunting. 20/20 DONE GOODNIGHT
