They're trying to sneak the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) into must-pass legislation because they know it's a terrible bill that will censor the internet and silence LGBTQIA+ people. I know we're all tired, but *please* call your reps again and ask them to put a stop to this terrible bill!

Analysis | Congress’s push to protect kids online is at a crossroads

Lawmakers are trying to fast-track legislation but face a dwindling window.

Washington Post
@charliejane KOSA is nothing more than a Trojan horse censorship and surveillance bill.

@charliejane

Legislators called, for what good it'll do.

@cavyherd It really does help!

@charliejane

I was careful to be polite, but there may have been a certain "why are we having this discussion *again* tone to the voicemails I left for the leg'rs....

@charliejane

I wish congress had an online push to protect kids at crossroads. High hoods, drivers using cellphones...

@charliejane done! Is Ed voting for this?
@charliejane can we just ban kids from the internet? Like leave one thing for adults
@wraptile @charliejane As a kid who grew up on the Internet to escape the mass censorship of real life *because* of my age, that is fuсking horrifying.
@enoch_exe_inc @charliejane I was being sarcastic on how absurd this whole issue of policing the internet is something parents should be doing.

@wraptile @enoch_exe_inc @charliejane I think even that is too much. Until you’re eighteen, you exist a void of complete rightless-ness, and the Internet offers not only a means of escape, but also a way to learn about the world as it is rather than what people, who are not kids, *think* what kids ought to learn.

And, every day, I see more people trying to close off the Internet. Your sarcasm is too close to reality even if I could detect it.

@charliejane the fact that they can just do that and it's common practice. The US simply cannot do a normal democratic process.
@charliejane ill say it again: ALL YOU NEED TO DO is write a 1 sentence email or a 10 second phone call saying ā€œI don’t like X. Please don’t.ā€ And a number increments in a spreadsheet. Get enough of those and it’ll make a difference. Tell yoyr friends and tell your family. It takes 2 minutes to find the info and make the call.
