#Meta is sun-setting their Daylight Distribution in favor of putting their efforts behind #OvertureMaps 🗾

https://daylightmap.org/2024/05/03/sunsetting-daylight.html

It makes sense as Meta was a Overture Maps Foundation founding member, together with Amazon, Microsoft, and TomTom.

The Daylight land cover dataset was pretty solid for self-hosted maps with #Maplibre & #Protomaps

Sunsetting Daylight

@djh I'm assuming that early Overture _is_ Daylight...
@jez @djh This is largely right. We haven’t done a good job at explaining this. But there’s more in Overture. Daylight had few checks on admins (why we had it in a sidecar) but there’s a lot more in Overture. Also better validation of the road network than Daylight had.
@jez @djh Also stay tuned to https://github.com/OvertureMaps/schema/pull/118 for land cover in Overture.

Proposal Add multiple resolutions of global land cover data to base theme in Overture (sometime in 2024). Examples below from Meta's production basemaps. Low Resolution, minZoom=0, maxZoom=4 Medi...

Technical posts from the Overture Maps engineering team

@jwass2000 @jez Awesome! This is nice to see! I read the post and would love to understand more about

1. What's the license of the landcover dataset now?

2. Do you have validation metrics on the derived landcover classes? As in: how accurate is this dataset (per class, per geography, etc.)

@jwass2000 @jez also if I get this right it'll basically never update.

Does it mean it reflects landcover from this year or last year during summer time?

Especially on high resolution, don't the landcover polygons change over time?

That would also be an opportunity to reflect the seasons and change we experience on Earth in a dataset 🌍✨
