Hrm.
I've avoided Nier: Automata because of the fanbase/fanart, but I just got curious and actually looked up a short video and... it kind of looks like what I wish Bayonetta 3 had been.

Anyone have any experience with it? How open is this? Hub based? JRPG styled? Level based with larger stages?

@Gwendolyn The game has a very wide range of genres by the time you'd played through it a few times.

That said, it's primarily an open area 3rd person action JRPG. Maybe a bit like Xenoblade Chronicles, map wise, there's a few areas you revisit as "home" but they're not really "home" if that makes sense.

I feel similarly as you do about the art and the fan base. Rest assured, the game itself is pretty separate from that and quite good. Definitely worth replaying a few times.

@Gwendolyn it's chapter based open-world-ish. New areas open up as the game goes on but you can revisit them for the most part.

@Gwendolyn Itโ€™s got Bayonetta defeated in its storytelling, woof, those Bayonetta "cutscenes" were rough. It's also not as mechanically tight as Bayonetta, but it's not a slouch or mindless, was made in part by Platinum after all.

Honestly, how much you'll like it depends on how much patience you have for Yoko Taro's particular brand of storytelling. It will either ruin your life as you get swallowed by a Drakengard shaped rabbit hole, or you'll play it once and move on to the next thing.

@mdstevens0612 Hrm. That gives me pause. Well... Just a little. I'm a mechanics first kind of gamer. Story can enhance things, but isn't super necessary.

I kinda love Bayonetta's story and goofy cutscenes.

I'm a weird person :P
Love me some camp.

@Gwendolyn Oh, NieR can be goofy, Yoko Taro literally wears a moon in public to conceal his identity. It will also make you ugly cry about little robots who just wanna be people so bad. And it can also be dark, although not usually as dark as Drakengard, the Shin Megami Tensei to its Persona. NieR is very much about its narrative and is IMHO worth experiencing just for that. The fact that it's also a competent hack and slash made in part by Platinum is a nice bonus.
