LB: On top of ethical domain registries, what would be the minimal rig for self hosting stuff?

What I envision is hosting some ActivityPub thing, maybe a Matrix server, and private cloud storage.

It doesn't have to be fast. I know this isn't some corp thing.

Would it be like, a Raspberry Pi, an SSD, and other stuff? To complicate matters, I only have a laptop. No monitor. So I'd need to connect it to my TV or remote connect to my laptop.

Being able to do it with open source stuff would be a bonus. A Pine board or whatever instead of a Raspberry Pi.

Cost is a bit of an issue. I'd prefer < $400USD. Though if there are clearly better options for more, I would like to hear about them.

Lastly, I would prefer something small that doesn't produce much heat. I'm going to shove it in a cupboard with my router and a ton of wires, so a server rack this isn't.

Thanks for all your help!

Thinking about it, I am taking a class on Raspberry Pis at work to do programs with them. I'm guessing its not the same type of thing being done, but it might get me more comfortable with the whole environment.
@Tourma The bare rig is certainly doable with an SBC of your choice, so long as someone has an SSD HAT or similar for it, you're connecting through wired connections, and the Pine Rockchip boards have pretty good choice of OS. I'd recommend more RAM than less as a general rule, and it sounds like you won't need a desktop environment, so you can probably accomplish all of the necessary administrative and installation business using ssh or local connections to the web server and services.
