⚠️ It's a trap ⚠️ (please boost for reach)

I was just informed that the Guardian (UK) is prepping to do a story on DIY HRT and is looking to interview trans folk, particularly teens.

The story will almost certainly be weaponized by conservatives to argue for removing access to the necessary materials.

Just like with the police, anything you say can and will be used against you by mainstream media.

Be safe out there fam

Update #2: God dammit Guardian US, I retract my kudos to you. This is why we can't have nice things.

Update #1: I wanted to share this article that was brought to my attention. The US Guardian wrote a piece that really gets to the heart of why I'm sounding a warning, while also helping to frame that this isn't directed at the .com Guardian—they seem to have a healthy viewpoint on how trans people should be treated.

@alice Also see: how Finnster was railroaded by The Times.

@aparna Wait, what happened to Finnster? This is the first I'm hearing of it.

@alice

I Got Doxxed.

@aparna @siderea @alice
No idea this happened.
Finn used to appear in my recommended Twitter and YouTube feeds.

I listen to TimesRadio from late-morning to afternoon during weekdays for the right-wing takes. They've upped their "coverage" of trans issues recently, with what felt like a whole day (last Wednesday or Thursday, I think). I learn a lot about the "gender critical" proponents ... but I can never remember their names, they all blur into one (except Sharron Davies).

From a purely technical standpoint once you dox yourself on the Internet you are always doxxed.

The Internet is forever.

@alice Oh no! I do not trust The Guardian! Even a place I did trust covering the topic would be suspect, getting this awareness out to the public especially right now seems like a very bad idea, despite how much knowing about it could potentially help trans people. :/ And like, I know there's trans folks who DIY T but like, I generally understand that to be illegal, whereas DIY E is at least in more of a grey area to legal, though that may be more my knowledge of Canada/USA than reflective of the UK.
@alice just remember, if a journo asks you about DIY HRT, this is the only correct response
@xaphania @alice alternatively describe the plot of She-Ra: Princess of Power and see how long it will take for them to notice
@xaphania @alice HRT? Is that the new boyband the kiddos are into these days?
@alice if anyone really is determined to speak to a journalist, I had the dubious pleasure of getting BBC media training and would be happy to spend some time with them explaining how things work. Basically, what they are getting into.

@alice 100% agreed. Even if one gives the best interview ever given, one that convinces anyone who hears it that trans rights are ordained directly from god, the publication will simple not publish it. The absolute best case is that nothing is used from your interview.

Anything short of immaculate perfection will result in your words being misrepresented, misconstrued, and manipulated to support the narrative the publication wants. Unfortunately in this day and age of trans panic, that narrative is that Big Bad Trans is out to get everyone and their children, because that's what sells papers, enforces the status quo, and distracts from the actual baddies who run the horror show.

The only winning move is for trans people to tell our stories on our terms and on our own grounds, smaller as they may be. Someday mainstream media will give fair representation to trans people, but that day is not today, nor will it start with anyone who doesn't already have a large and supportive audience.

@alice second time i see those posts on fedi but nobody gives us here a source...

i mean i understand that in some countries people have to treat Press like cops..
but without any reliable source material i "press x to doubt" on everything that attacks the press.
@alice This is an unfair generalisation of 'mainstream media'. I see no reason why to distrust The Guardian, I only know their reporting as fair and balanced. It's my go-to news source for balanced climate change reporting, for example. We don't do decent journalists a favour if we toss them all on the same pile. We need less polarisation, not more.
Hundreds Of Guardian Staff Have Signed A Letter To The Editor Criticising Its "Transphobic Content"

"The pattern of publishing transphobic content has interfered with our work and cemented our reputation as a publication hostile to trans rights and trans employees."

@kritischelezer @alice
More often than not, “I’ve only known X to be Y” should mark the beginning of introspection rather than its end.

@kritischelezer @alice The Guardian UK is extremely anti-trans, so much that the Guardian US wrote a mild op-ed trying to call them out on it.

If you don't have experience with this, listen to the people who do.

@kritischelezer @alice And "we need less polarization" is emphatically NOT the thing to say here.

"oh can't we just compromise on whether gender transition should be criminalized?" No! We cannot!

@alice Name the writer so we can inform/shame them as needed?
@alice If they come for me I will make them

@alice Don't talk to the cops, don't talk to reporters. Especially not the Grauniad, at least the Daily Heil or the Scum are upfront about their bigotry.

@alice I’m not on HRT and not knowledgeable about it at all but isn’t DIY HRT really risky? I don’t know much about it but that’s what I heard…
Would be glad to learn more about it.
@zomka @alice it's riskier I would say, but honestly if you do your research, stay informed on sources, and get blood tests regularly to know and adjust your levels, it should be fine. Obviously if you can get your HRT without DIYing it that is preferred imo (at least here in a good part of the US). Regardless it's always good to know what you want even if you aren't DIYing it so you can tell if your Endo is not giving you enough of something.

@alice for anyone having doubts about the trap, please watch Babylon 5 S4E8 The Illusion of Truth.

I watched it yesterday and wow. Like, you know it's gonna be a trap, and somehow, it is still worse than you thought...
Those writers were 🔥

@alice For people who might not recognise what kind of danger this is, look up what happened after Daily Fail did one a few years ago. 2018, IIRC. Several UK sources of DIY estrogen ended up closing, and the bogus charges against Dr Webberley might have been partly inspired by that campaign. (As you recall, they were initiated by one of the official gate-keepers writing a letter.)
@alice not from the UK, so requesting more info, The Guardian is not perceived as anti trans media around here, comparing the guardian and the police sounds alarming, what made you raise the alarm ?
@alice Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any way to support the US Guardian but not the UK Guardian.
@alice
Waiting for the GOP to ban clean water for everyone because trans people might need it.

@alice Retract that update. You linked to an article from 2018.

Here they are today promoting the Cass Report and urging bans on trans healthcare: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/apr/11/the-guardian-view-on-the-cass-report-rising-numbers-of-gender-distressed-young-people-need-help

@alice Re: update number 2; there is no real difference between the US and the UK, it's all just one website, with the same content.

There are differing opinions internally, though, and the US staff is definitely better about it, on average, than the UK staff.

#DontPayTheGuardian

@alice
people think the Guardian is left wing because its more left than the rest of right wing media, but its actually a centrist paper which engages in both-sides-ism, running stories for and against stuff

they did it with women having the right to vote, back when they were just the Manchester Guardian, running articles by people who were for and against, and they are doing the same thing for trans rights

they will claim otherwise retrospectively, once social progress - which comes not from debate but by scaring the establishment or forcing their hand - penetrates the upper class schools they source talent from

but they are not the champion of the left people assume, and one need only peruse the comments section to see a worrying lack of progressive values

women's rights, trans rights, etc is not a debate, its a question of human rights and human dignity

@alice this article sounds like bullshit
