I'm on the eternal/impossible quest to find the perfect #notetaking app. I've tried them all and always end up disappointed. #SimpleNotes, #StandardNotes, #AppleNotes, #Notesnook, #Obsidian, #Anytype, etc. I'm tired of compromising.

I need something where I can just shove all my markdown or plaintext #notes (and corresponding images) into one folder and have an #opensource cross-platform (including #Docker) editing interface that can sync via #Nextcloud or #WebDAV or whatever. Where is this app??! Does it even exist?

The closest solution was Notational Velocity over a decade ago, but even that wasn't cross-platform.

#QOwnNotes uses standard local Markdown files and has Nextcloud integration. You can edit the files with Nextcloud Markdown editor or Nextcloud Collectives.

#Logseq uses local Markdown files but forces the use of indented lists. You can sync files with Nextcloud or whatever you want. It has Git integration. You can edit your local file both with a local app or a web application that you can eventually self-host.

@alxlg @rae The indented list "feature" in #Logseq is both puzzling and a total deal-breaker for me. I also couldn't really understand how you're *supposed to use* the app.

@passthejoe It's definitely an opinionated choice and not for everyone, but recently it finally clicked for me:

Bullets and identation enforce foldable, summarized notes. Not ideal for traditionally long-prose content, but helpful for more active engagement with the material.
