Bullet point 1 is the funniest thing I’ve ever read about #ADHD. Also true.
@deirdresm OMFG that is so sad someone like that doesn't get shunned.
@Nuncio We tend to have a lot more friends because of all the interests.
@deirdresm I have never heard that and I didn’t know it was possible
@deirdresm I often read about ADHD things and notice similarities with some of my fibrofatigue symptoms but this is the first time I've seen learning Thai included 🤔
@deirdresm You gotta put a source on these things so we can go read the rest??
@PearlescentFerret @cassolotl @deirdresm

I feel called out on #7 lol (I am not diagnosed but more than likely have ADHD)
@ahhhhhhoniichan in college I would keep my keys on a lanyard on the doorknob so that when I went to open it, I could train myself to automatically grab my keys. It only ever failed when other people were in the room and would walk out before me (since they tended to hold the door for me).
@ahhhhhhoniichan @cassolotl @deirdresm @PearlescentFerret I was tested at the age of 45 and was "a cm from a diagnosis" (the doctor's own words).

@ahhhhhhoniichan @PearlescentFerret @cassolotl @deirdresm

Yesss, I sing “keys wallet phone mask” and pat the place where they are to confirm whenever leaving the house. Also I have a limited number of places I’m “allowed” to put my keys so they’re always in one of them.

@nerkles @ahhhhhhoniichan @PearlescentFerret @cassolotl

Oh, the old (for AMAB) “spectacles, testicles, wallet, and watch” check.

@ahhhhhhoniichan @PearlescentFerret @cassolotl @deirdresm

omg I’ve trained myself on this so hard that my brain automatically does this every time I cross my front door — if my keys are not in my hand, or I can’t feel them digging into me in my pocket I get the ~spidey-sense~ before I close the door.

Derived from a long time of training myself with “phone, wallet, keys, iPod, headphones” every time I walked out the door.

(Which sticks in my head and comes back every now and then, even though I’m down to just “phone, keys”).

@deirdresm another way to consider it is that I would love to be into a thousand things but I have to prioritise _so that_ I can (as they put it) do laundry. Because (to continue the metaphor) someone has to do laundry or we all end up in dirty clothes.
@Geoff Yep, sadly, prioritizing is an executive function skill, and guess what’s nerfed in ADHD?
@deirdresm @Geoff yeah like, it's not that autistic/ADHD people just don't WANT to be clean or it's "not a priority" lol ... 🤨

@itsmeholland @Geoff

Or you have that shirt with the grease spot that you need to clean before the wash so you don’t ruin the shirt by making the stain permanent in the dryer, but you’ve done two loads of laundry since you set the shirt aside because ADHD.

@deirdresm Thank you so much. This + the extended post explain my life.
@deirdresm I'm in this picture and don't like it
@deirdresm NO WONDER THEY HAVE SO MUCH TIME TO DO THEIR LAUNDRY
@chrisisgr8 I know, right? Both my husband and I LOLed at that.

My special interest is optimizing the shit out of laundry.

cc @deirdresm

@ellie @deirdresm My sister in law does like 7 loads a day and I worry about her
@deirdresm Please avoid discovering modular synths, for your financial well being. We don't call it this for nothing:
@NaomiElizabeth I have quite a few synths, but drew the line at modular for this reason. 🤣
@deirdresm I feel a bit called out by this and the whole reddit post... and *this* (as in this fedi post) comment section.
... Should I... Should I get a diagnosis? 😆
@EnaWasHere Getting diagnosed helped me. I’m not on stimulants, but managing what was nerfing my concentration through med and diet changes helped a ton.

@deirdresm If you don't mind sharing, what dietary changes did you find helpful?

@EnaWasHere

@riley @EnaWasHere Adding more Omega-3s helps, especially from small fish. Per some of the papers, about 20% as effective as stimulant meds.

@EnaWasHere @deirdresm

neurodivergent people travel in packs is a self targeting meme for a reason

@deirdresm
How could you not want to try everything?
@deirdresm I always think it must be very sad to be neurotypical and not really deeply interested in anything, that seems like a really boring way to live

@afewbugs On the flip side, we’re generalists by nature and don’t deep dive into things as much as some who are neurotypical.

This can lead to feelings of inadequacy when we inevitably compare ourselves to dedicated specialists in each of those things we’re interested in.

@deirdresm @afewbugs

let me tell you about hyperfocus....

@darwinwoodka @afewbugs Hyperfocus is what allowed me to have a career at all!

Unfortunately, when my chronic pain got worse, it messed with my hyperfocus (because pain is a priority interruption).

@deirdresm @afewbugs oof, thats rough. Hope you're doing better?

@darwinwoodka @afewbugs

Yes, went through a chronic pain program twice, found enough med management and enough other stuff sorted that I can work again. \o/

@deirdresm If that was true, neurotypicals would never have tried to made "special interest" or "hyperfocus" sound like it's a bad thing.

@afewbugs

@riley @afewbugs Hyperfocus is awesome…so long as you’re hyperfocused on what you need to.

@deirdresm Neurotypical 'deep experience' tends to involve passing a bunch of prescribed courses about what somebody thought belongs into a field, but they often don't touch most of the external connections. ADHDer deep experience tends to follow all the connections, at least a little bit, and its course does not follow pre-packaged courses but whatever problem(s) they have been working on.

@afewbugs

@riley @afewbugs

I still remember the job interview where brain latched onto an array where a dictionary would have been better, and it got painful as we got further on, but no, brain would not get its claws out of that concept.

So awful. :(

@deirdresm oh gosh...

that sounds like me. I'm scared. I might be ADHD

@writeblankspace ADHD expresses somewhat differently in women, and a lot of times it’s missed (I wasn’t diagnosed until far later in life).

@deirdresm @alda @writeblankspace I have inattentive ADHD, too, and wasn’t diagnosed until my late 30s. I also wonder if the inattentive type doesn’t start interfering significantly with daily life until you’re older. Maybe, when we’re younger, we have better coping mechanisms for it? (But that’s just my own musing on it—no data.)

@ramsey @alda @writeblankspace

I never had great coping mechanisms for it, but they did worsen with age.

@deirdresm *nervously hides modular synths*
@forestine Aww, as a synth person, no need to hide them! I go window shop at Perfect Circuit too.
@deirdresm LOL I just snorted coffee thru my nose, so thanks for that.
@deirdresm too many interests, not enough passion or energy for half of them.
@deirdresm I'd read this but I'm too busy working through my new murdle book while also playing an mmo, contemplating my knitting and thinking about my rabbits..
How aren't they bored?
@deirdresm modular synths are an adhd death trap, youll go broke faster than you can say "maybe i should stop wasting money on interests that ill drop in like a week"
@deirdresm having so many interests is very exhausting, but way better than just have like one main hob... thats not possible! 🫣
