I wonder if y’all can help me out—I’m trying to collect a list of web development communities (not related to any one specific tool or framework), can you reply with your favorites?

(if you don’t have a favorite I will also accept communities you’re familiar with 😅)

@zachleat

front end horse
Melonland forums
Neocities

@zachleat there's a really long running German HTML community too that I've totally forgotten the name of 🤔

@sarajw
Are you thinking of selfhtml.org?
/cc @zachleat

Thanks to SelfHTML I got into #WebDev back in the day:

I grew up writing HTML from scratch. And later JS, and eventually CSS.

@zachleat As someone in the New Haven, CT area, I'm rather partial to our local https://newhaven.io discord community.
Edit: I realize you said "web dev" newhaven.io is actually all kinds of dev.

I used to read Medium a lot, and I still occasionally enjoy dev.to, but the noise-signal ratio doesn't feel optimal on those platforms.

If anything it's brought me back to the "small web". I'm using RSS much more, as well as Kagi's "small web" project when I'm searching.

The Spicy Web
@vanilla @zachleat I was going to mention this!

@zachleat Refresh DC has been around since 2006, though largely dormant since the pandemic. I founded the group, but stepped back in ~2019.

They’re working on getting some meetups back on the calendar.

https://refresh-dc.org

Refresh DC – The best and brightest new media professionals in the DC metro area

Refresh DC is a group of Web Designers, Web Developers, and other New Media Professionals gathering to create a community based in Washington, DC.

@zachleat The @fronteers Slack conmunity is my favourite. Its audience primarily speaks Dutch, though, so I don’t know if it’s useful for you or your list!
@zachleat Django Community, of course!
@zachleat I’m surprised to see that no one mentioned the WordPress community yet. That’s a shame, because it is not only huge, obviously, but also very welcoming and diverse. Pinging @remkus for a confirmation.

@zachleat I mean, yes, it is related to a CMS, but goes way beyond that.

As for unattached communities, I second @timsev suggestion about @fronteers. This is a collective that raised the bar for conferences and for web standards.

@paul @zachleat absolutely, yes! What kind of web development communities are you looking for Zach? I'm asking because our community is so big that we have many groups focusing on particular tools and such!
@remkus @paul I wouldn’t turn away any mentions but my original question was looking for communities that are independent of a single-tool!
@zachleat sorry, I overread that part in first instance.
@zachleat
Not sure how no-one mentioned Lemmy yet, but here you go 🙂 https://programming.dev/c/webdev
